Prayers for the victims of the Wisconsin Gurdwara shooting

August 5, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

I have been watching television in disbelief, grief and frustration about the shooting at the Gurdwara in Wisconsin. I will leave the news reporting to news websites as I try to sort my thoughts and make sense of what has happened, its fallout and the implications. For now, I pray for peace for the victims and their families, and the Sikh and broader Wisconsin communities. And, I would like to express heartfelt gratitude to the officers whose heroic efforts put […]

Cheering the Olympic Sikhs

August 2, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Like many others, I have been watching the Olympics and following closely the American national team in the many events that I don’t get to watch typically. And, like many Sikhs across the world (especially on social media sites), I have also celebrated the presence of Sikhs on the various national teams such as India and Canada (Sikh Canadian Arjun Bhullar made waves for wearing a turban during the opening ceremonies as he walked with the Canadian Olympic team). An […]

Daniel Denvir and Zoe Strauss write in the Philadelphia City Paper about the ethnic diversity of Millbourne, Pennsylvania (a suburb of Philadelphia), which has a large South Asian population. Lessons learned in NY and the CA Workplace Religious Freedom Act

July 26, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The New York Times published an editorial last month about the workplace discrimination case involving the city’s Metropolitan Transit Authority and their Sikh and Muslim employees: This settlement should have been reached years ago. By dragging things out so long, the M.T.A. has deepened the sense of injury in the Sikh and Muslim communities. Prominent in the Justice case was Kevin Harrington, a subway train operator and a Sikh who wears a turban. After the 9/11 attacks, he was commended […]
