A review of Sikh history comics from sikhcomics.com

February 6, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Most of my early education in Sikh history came from comic books, namely those published by Amar Chitra Katha, based in India.  My father purchased every title related to Sikhism that was released by this company — covering the stories of the Sikh Gurus to those of Sikh legends and heroes —  and I loved reading and re-reading these comic books until I knew the stories by heart. It was a great introduction to Sikhism that captured my imagination.  As […]

Saffron Press’s “How to tie a patka (dastaar)”

October 25, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The patka is a headcovering worn as a turban by young Sikh boys. Saffron Press, the publisher of A Lion’s Mane and Dreams of Hope, just released the video above to educate children about the patka and demonstrate how it is tied. I transitioned from a patka to a full turban when I was 16 years old (I still wear one when I play sports).  The video – which is excellent work – reminded me of my younger days when I was […]

The mixed emotions around Indian Independence Day

August 15, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

For many people of South Asian heritage across the world, August 15th is a time of celebration.  Today is the anniversary of the independence of India and Pakistan from British rule in 1947.  However, it also marks one of the most tragic events in human history: the land that was ruled by the British for over a century was to be partitioned along religious lines, resulting in one of the largest mass migrations of people in human history. Despite the enormity […]
