February 24, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

While interacting with students of Khalsa College, his alma mater, Rattan said he “faced many ups and downs in life, but emerged victorious on every occasion.” He said “never say die attitude” help him to reach his goal… “Sikhs mean a lot to the world,” he said, adding that in future too he would follow the ethics of Sikhism in letter and spirit. – Tejdeep Singh Rattan describes his experience in becoming a soldier in the US Army to students […]

No. 9 on Time Magazine’s Top 10 Religion Stories of 2010

December 25, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

As we near the end of 2010, Time Magazine published their “Top 10 Everything of 2010“. Among the topics was the Top 10 Religion Stories of 2010, which predominantly featured stories related to Christianity or Islam (or sometimes Christianity vs. Islam).  The one exception came in at number nine on the list: Obama’s skipping Darbar Sahib (aka the Golden Temple) in Amritsar: The Golden Temple in Amritsar is the center of the Sikh religion and, at one point in the […]

The “city of turbans and beards”

December 19, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Days earlier, I had visited the city of turbans and beards, Amritsar, the Sikh holy shrine in the Punjab region. My desire, like that of millions of Sikhs, was to see the magnificent Golden Temple, which preserves within its walls the sacred scripture of Adi Granth. The hospitality was immaculate. President Obama offered his greetings to Sikhs for this occasion, and for the second year in a row, the White Host hosted an event to commemorate the birth of Guru Nanak.  Interestingly: […]

The most powerful woman in the world

November 17, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

During the Obama trip to India, First Lady Michelle Obama met in New Delhi with young girls from schools around India.  A group of them were from Amritsar (if the Obamas won’t go to Amritsar…).  One of those girls had a question: Manpreet asked another tough question: whether Mrs. Obama or the President had to apologize first after they get into a fight. “She said: ‘Of course the President makes up first’,” the girl said, drawing giggles from the rest of the group. […]

Where the TSA and the Golden Temple intersect

November 7, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

During Obama’s visit to India, Indian Member of Parliament Harsimrat Badal (of the opposition Akali Party) directly conveyed to the US President her concerns about Obama’s avoidance of Amritsar: According to Harsimrat, the US president was gracious enough to acknowledge the sentiment and replying that his present visit was a “rushed affair” and that he would try to come for a longer visit next time, during which he would like to visit Punjab. “The pleasure would be all mine,” is what he […]
