The Weekly Beard! for April 9, 2012

April 9, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The Maharaja exhibition at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, California, closed yesterday, but I had the privilege to visit the museum before it did. It was an intriguing and three-dimensional look at the life and styles of India’s maharajas, including those of the Sikh states of Kapurthala, Patiala and Lahore (the latter of which was that of renown Sikh monarch Maharaja Ranjit Singh). The exhibition was very well done and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The image above came […]

Picture of the Day: New Punjabi American museum exhibit opens in Yuba City, California

April 2, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Showcasing the story of the Punjabi American and South Asian migration to the United States is a valuable and needed resource for current and future generations. I congratulate all the individuals and families along with the Punjabi American Heritage Society of Yuba City for their dedication and hard work for the successful completion of this project. — California Governor Jerry Brown (as quoted in the Punjabi American Heritage Society press release) on the opening of the Becoming American exhibit at […]

Sikh history on display in California

February 1, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

As a Sikh child who grew up in the west, my knowledge and experience with Sikh history came mostly through stories and books. Aside from occasional visits to India, what I knew and saw of Sikh history was predominantly left to my imagination that provided to me a visual to the words I read or the static pictures I saw. Sometimes, I wonder if it’s this almost theoretical experience that results in the dissociation many Sikh youth feel from their […]

San Francisco Republican Party elects Sikh woman as chair

April 6, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Well, the GOP Party of San Francisco unanimously elected me, an orthodox Sikh with a funny name, to be its chairwoman. So, as far as I’m concerned, it’s never been an issue here in my rise through the ranks of the party. To the contrary, I’d say that members of my party have actively reached out and encouraged me to run for leadership positions. I’m the chairman of outreach for the California Republican Party statewide. The party asked me to […]

Protecting and strengthening our children

November 29, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The recent study released by the Sikh Coalition about the discrimination and bullying that Sikh children have faced in Bay Area schools highlights what these children go through: One middle school boy profiled in the report is Harrjit Singh [sic], who didn’t want to say what school he attends. On Sept. 11 this year, Harjit said kids called him a terrorist. And during a P.E. class, somebody ripped off his patka and said, “I’m sorry, I just wanted to see […]

Multi-faith Thanksgiving

November 25, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

TV station KABC in San Francisco reports on St. Anthony’s Church bringing together six faith groups (including Sikhs) to serve the needy on Thanksgiving: “So often in the news today what we hear are different faiths struggling with each other or saying one is bringing another down. We’re saying, ‘You know what? We all work together for the good of our brothers and sisters who struggle,’” says St. Anthony’s Executive Director Shari Roeseler. It’s the true expression of faith when […]

Does it only get worse from here?

November 19, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The Bay Area is reputed to be one of the most liberal places to live in the country.  It also contains one of the larger Sikh populations in the United States. On that context, the Sikh Coalition‘s recently released study, Bay Area Civil Rights Report 2010, provides some sobering data: 69% of Sikh boys who wear patkas or dastaars [both are types of turbans] have been harassed in school 2 out of 3 Sikh boys in middle school report being […]
