Jasmeet Saroya, a sixth-grader at Andros Karperos School in Yuba City, California, won the Sutter County Spelling Bee two weeks ago.  Jasmeet described his hard work and dedication to his approach :

Jasmeet Saroya, who, along with second-place finisher Rio Miller of Lincrest Elementary School, will compete in the state elementary school spelling championship next month in Stockton, said for three hours a day, his dad would read a word and he’d try to spell it…

With every word, Jasmeet Saroya took the same approach: Asking the reader to repeat it at least once, and usually also asking for both the definition and a sentence using the word.

“I wanted to completely know what I was spelling,” he said, after he posed for pictures with Miller and third-place winner Sameer Gupta of Butte Vista Elementary School. “To be 100 percent.”

The California State Spelling Bee is to be held on April 21, 2012. Good luck, Jasmeet!
