November 7, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

At the Sikh Art & Film Foundation, we believe Sikh values are American values, and we know that film is a powerful medium. Through choosing the best films and gathering together every fall, Sikh and non-Sikh, we honor our history and share our values and humanity in a way that the gap with other people. But we are not afraid to show films that reveal our foibles, for Sikhs are also ordinary people — and people sometimes fall short of […]

How the mustache became a movement

November 6, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

For those looking for a break from the nation’s focus on today’s US elections, I offer a change of pace. Moreover, November is also “Movember” in many parts of the western world — a growing movement to raise awareness for men’s health in which men grow mustaches during the month of November for the cause of prostate cancer research. Movember started […]

What is considered the largest annual Sikh Nagar Kirtan (religious procession) in the United States took place yesterday in Yuba City, California, for the 33rd year.  Above, the Appeal-Democrat offers a unique one-minute time-lapse video of the event, and a slide show at their website. Tomorrow is election day: know your voting rights

November 5, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

With tomorrow being election day in the United States, the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF) offers voting advice and resources oriented towards the Sikh American community through their “SikhVOTE” campaign: Why should you? In 1923 the Supreme Court said Sikh Americans could not become citizens — we could not vote and were denied a voice in our country. Today, we have the right to vote, the right to share our voice and determine the direction of our […]

November 1, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Sikhs in Yuba City, California, will be holding their 33rd annual Sikh Parade this Sunday, which is often recognized as the largest Sikh nagar kirtan (religious procession) in the country: In recent years, the international event has attracted 60,000 to 100,000 people to the parade route, along with hundreds from the Yuba-Sutter Sikh community who pitch in to serve food and drink to anyone and everyone. The nagar kirtan usually commemorates and coincides with the celebration of the birth of […]
