February 25, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF) and the Sikh Coalition sent out coordinated alerts today that a 46-year-old Sikh American man in Florida was shot while driving last Saturday night with his 13-year-old son over the Dunlawton Avenue Bridge in Port Orange, Florida: According to local news reports, as Mr. Kanwaljit Singh was traveling in his car with his 13-year-old son, a late 80s to early 90s Ford F-150 truck pulled up beside him, and several shots […]

Fauja Singh reaches the finish line, but will keep on running

February 24, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

In arguably the best piece written about centenarian (and world’s oldest) marathoner Fauja Singh, Jordon Conn of ESPN provides a touching biography of the inspirational figure: Once he got going, he had to listen to cries of “Osama!” and “Saddam!” from the crowd. The pack pulled away, and Fauja slipped behind, stopping every so often for rest and medical treatment. Blisters formed, and soon they burst, the blood filling Fauja’s sock. His run became a walk; his walk became a […]

Profiling the mentally ill in the gun violence debate

February 22, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Yesterday, in a speech delivered at a conference in Connecticut about gun violence, Vice President Joe Biden issued a challenge to Americans to take on the issue: “There’s a moral price to be paid for inaction,” he said. We have certainly seen significant debate around what action to take in addressing America’s gun violence epidemic. From universal background checks to regulation of video games, and from arming teachers to banning assault-style weapons, there are no shortage of proposals nor sides […]

Celebrate Sikh Environment Day on March 14, 2013

February 22, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

When Guru Har Rai became the seventh Guru of the Sikhs in March 1644, he brought with him a legacy of a sincere appreciation of the natural environment, an appreciation that we are rediscovering today. As our society at-large is becoming more aware about environmental issues, it is timely that Sikhs explore the ethos enshrined in our teachings about our relationship with nature. On this anniversary during the past two years, EcoSikh, a non-profit organization (whose stated mission is to […]

SALDEF reports high rate of bullying of Sikh children in southern CA

February 21, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

67% of Sikh American children surveyed were bullied or harassed within the last school year and 31% have been threatened with physical violence or harm.  These numbers are staggering compared to national averages and an indication of the serious challenges that our children continue to endure on a regular basis. — Jasjit Singh, Executive Director of the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF), reports from a survey taken by SALDEF of Sikh American students in southern California. Still the TSA after all these years

February 19, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

What does one do when an officer of a government agency does not follow their own policy and in the process violates your rights? If we are speaking about the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA), we often don’t know. On the Huffington Post, Simran Jeet Singh shares a recent episode when a TSA officer forcefully patted down Singh’s turban — a religious article of faith for Sikhs: I’ve made this cross-country journey hundreds of times in my life and have […]
