Sikholars 2014 announces Call for Papers

August 16, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The Sikholars Graduate Student Conference is now inviting presentation proposals for Sikholars 2014, its fifth annual gathering to discuss topics in Sikh and Punjab studies taking place from February 15-16, 2014 at Stanford University in Stanford, California. The conference is sponsored by the Center for South Asia at Stanford University and Jakara Movement. I find remarkable that the conference is already planning its fifth session. I still recall attending the first conference, and the 2013 conference is still fresh in my mind. […]

Reflecting on the 2013 Sikholars Graduate Student Conference

February 26, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Ten days ago, I attended the fourth annual Sikholars Graduate Student Conference that took place at picturesque Stanford University in Stanford, California. I would like to formally thank Jakara Movement for this year’s event, and extend my appreciation to all of the presenters, panelists, moderators, volunteers and attendees who made this year’s conference so enriching. In the realm of Sikh academia, I consider myself a lay person. However, I have been a fan of this conference since I attended the […]

Profiling the mentally ill in the gun violence debate

February 22, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Yesterday, in a speech delivered at a conference in Connecticut about gun violence, Vice President Joe Biden issued a challenge to Americans to take on the issue: “There’s a moral price to be paid for inaction,” he said. We have certainly seen significant debate around what action to take in addressing America’s gun violence epidemic. From universal background checks to regulation of video games, and from arming teachers to banning assault-style weapons, there are no shortage of proposals nor sides […]

Amar Sawhney, CEO of Ocular Therapeutix, talks about entrepreneurship

February 5, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

In the video above released by the Innovation Movement (advocacy group on behalf of entrepreneurs, via @amritsays), Amar Sawhney, CEO of Ocular Therapeutix, discusses being an immigrant and an entrepreneur in the United States. In another 2010 story chronicling his road to entrepreneurial success, Amar Sawhney shares a story that is not uncommon among many immigrants who came to the United States in search of opportunity, and particularly those from India — arriving with very little money or social support […]

Registration now open for Sikholars conference, Feb. 16-17

January 17, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Registration is now open for the fourth annual Sikholars Graduate Student & Professionals Conference taking place from February 16 to 17 in Stanford, California. I have written often about this conference. Having attended the first three conferences, I have found the experiences to be enlightening and rewarding. I am looking forward to attending again this year and recommend to others about this gathering of minds to discuss topics related to Sikhs and the Sikh faith. The conference has grown each […]

Save the date: Sikholars Graduate Student Conference, February 16-17, 2013

November 27, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

I have written often about the annual Sikholars Graduate Student Conference that takes place in California each year. My interest and involvement with the conference has been as a member of the audience, but I feel strongly about the forum that Sikholars provides to our community, and support it wholeheartedly. I’ve enjoyed immensely each of the three conferences I attended. The conference brings together those engaged in academic study of topics pertaining to Sikhs: from India to the diaspora, and […]

Sikholars 2012 presentation videos available online

May 23, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Jakara Movement, one of the sponsors of the Sikholars Sikh Graduate Conference (that I have written about often), is providing videos of this year’s presentations that took place during the conference in Hayward, California back in February. Having attended each of the first three, I am a big fan of the Sikholars conference. It is not only a showcase of what Sikhs are achieving in the academic world and their expertise in a variety of fields, but the conference also […]

Valarie Kaur’s “10 Sikh Women You Should Know and Why You Should Know Them”

March 22, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

We Sikhs talk a great talk about women’s equality, but we are steeped in patriarchal culture that makes us complicit in the erasure of women, past and present. Even the few famous women in history are defined in relation to their men. Their full contributions as thinkers, poets, warriors, advocates unto themselves are eclipsed by the men they supported. The real life consequence? Sikh girls today are told they’re fully equal, and yet expected to carry out traditional subservient gender […]
