A hitchhiker’s guide to Darbar Sahib

February 14, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

For Sikhs around the world, Darbar Sahib, the center of the Sikh faith in Amritsar, India, is held in sacred esteem. Also known as Harmandir Sahib or as the Golden Temple, Sikhs around the world endeavor to visit this place constructed in the early 17th century by Guru Arjan. Such is the devotion of Sikhs to this place that in the 19th century, the Sikh king, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, gilded the upper walls of the structure in gold. After its […]

Last week in Ohio, a leader of an Amish sect was given 15 years in prison for forcibly cutting the beards and hair of other Amish individuals in 2011. Others were also sentenced in what was considered an attack based on religious grounds: To the Amish, a beard is a significant symbol of faith and manhood, and the way Amish women wear their hair also is a symbol of faith. Persecuted as a hate crime, this case is relevant to […]

Contrasting religious dominance with religious freedom

February 11, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

A recent study by The Barna Group surveying the topic of religious freedom in the United States suggests that a large proportion of Evangelical Christians believe that their religious freedom is under threat because of a perception that “some groups have actively tried to move society away from traditional Christian values.” An article in Patheos (via @jbarooah) summarizes the study and addresses the perception, providing recommendations for Evangelicals around understanding the difference between dominance and freedom: First, we need to […]

February 11, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

In a recent interview with the Hindustan Times, Lieutenant Brian Murphy of the Oak Creek Police Department talks about the attack on Sikhs in Oak Creek, Wisconsin six months ago in which he took 15 bullets by the attacker, and reflects: The kind of activism that happened in Oak Creek post the tragedy should have happened before the tragedy. Every community has to be pro-active. Hate crime is not about anything but about being ignorant. One of the tenets of […]

Sikh games available for Android devices

February 9, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh
