The Christian organization “Sojourners” has placed billboard advertisements near sites of recent hate crimes against Sikhs and Muslims: In light of the recent acts of violence and vandalism against religious minorities across the country, Sojourners is calling on Christians to stand up against the hatred. Picture of the Day: US First Lady visits Oak Creek, WI victims

Yesterday, after a campaign event in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, US First Lady Michelle Obama met privately with the victims of the August 5 shooting at the Oak Creek, Wisconsin Gurdwara shooting: She spoke briefly with temple secretary Kulwant Dhaliwal and Oak Creek Mayor Stephen Scaffidi, telling them, almost in a whisper, “It’s my honor to be here with you. I’m sorry it’s under these circumstances, but I am anxious to meet with the families and lend whatever support I can.”

Picture of the Day: Why is this man wearing a turban?

Teju Cole, in The New Inquiry, asks of the above painting (which predates Sikhism): Why is this man wearing a turban? The gray-eyed gaze of the man in the painting is a dare. Show me who’s done it better, he seems to say. Didn’t think so, he adds. I am not well-versed in analyzing works of art. However, it does appear that the man in the painting is also making another statement:

Picture of the Day: Sikh Scouts Troop in Fremont, CA

The Fremont 4th of July Parade Committee is a volunteer non-profit organization that holds the 4th of July parade in Fremont, California each year. This year, one of the participating groups in the parade was Sikh Scouts Troop 600, who was featured on the Fremont 4th of July Parade’s Facebook page. Formed in 2009 in Santa Clara County, Sikh Scouts Troop 600 was the first Sikh-oriented  troop in the Boy Scouts of America organization.

Picture of the Day: Sikhs hold first-ever Nagar Kirtan in Turlock, CA

Picture of the Day: Salem, OR Nagar Kirtan

The Sikh community of  Salem, Oregon held their annual Nagar Kirtan (religious procession) yesterday to commemorate the martyrdom of Guru Arjun in 1606: [Susan] Hughs said she didn’t know Salem had a Sikh community, which is estimated to be a couple hundred families, but she saw the huge crowd parading through Commercial Street SE and saw Sikhs everywhere. “Who knew?” she said.
