June 25, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Two weeks ago, I introduced the film project with WINGS and ROOTS by filmmaker Christina Antonakos-Wallace. with WINGS and ROOTS is a 90-minute documentary that tells the stories of five people from different immigrant communities living in New York or Berlin, Germany, who have struggled to shape their identity in various ways. The film features The Langar Hall’s own Sonny Singh, a Sikh living in New York. Part of his story was featured in the well-received short documentary Article of […]

Snake-charming into Hollywood

June 7, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Actor/comedian Aasif Mandvi, an Indian American (though not a Sikh), talks about the stereotypical roles he was forced to accede in order to make his way in Hollywood: I got a callback, and my agent called to ask if I owned a turban. I said — a little defensively, I admit — that if I owned a turban, I would probably have worn it; it’s not something you leave home without. She laughed, saying, “Yeah, that makes sense — but […]

June 7, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

At a ceremony last week, the US Marines posthumously awarded Cpl. Gurpreet Singh (of Antelope, California) with the Bronze Star with Combat “V” (which recognizes acts of heroism). His sister, Manpreet Kaur, described how Cpl. Singh was inspired by his Sikh heritage: “When he was younger, he always looked up to people who fought wars,” Kaur said. “He would see the military men who sacrificed so much and would look up to them. He admired the courage of how people […]

Your weekend Waris, part II

May 31, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Another weekend is upon us, and New York actor/designer Waris Ahluwalia presents himself (via @Kaurista) just in time: Through Sunday, August 18, 2013, the Rhode Island School of Design Museum in Providence, Rhode Island, is hosting a photo exhibition about the “dandy” fashion trend called Artist/Rebel/Dandy, which features Waris Ahluwalia: Rather than following strict definitions, Artist/Rebel/Dandy features myriad manifestations of the dandy’s style and persona, from the discreet sophistication and consummate elegance of Beau Brummell (1778–1840) to the romantics and […]

“I have never been in the presence of someone so holy in all of my life.”

May 30, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Holly Sennett, a speech-language pathologist, writes about her patient Punjab Singh, who was severely wounded during the mass shooting at a Gurdwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, last August. He has been in a long-term care facility ever since: Punjab Singh traveled all over the world to share spiritual truths. He has taught about the oneness of all of life and the need to love and forgive. He was a visiting congregational leader on this August 5th day at the Oak […]

Balpreet Kaur and the power of kindness

May 15, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Last fall, Ohio college student Balpreet Kaur became well-known for her response to a photo of her that was surreptitiously posted to the social website Reddit: The object of the photo was an attempt at mockery. Among the first 100 responses to the posting on Reddit were harsh and derogatory comments about Balpreet Kaur’s facial hair, gender, ethnicity, and religion. And, what began as mockery on one specific website was beginning to spread virally on the internet. Balpreet Kaur’s response […]

Picture of the Day: Hockey Night in Punjabi

April 26, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

On their front page today, the New York Times reports about the Punjabi-language broadcast of ice hockey games in Canada by the CBC, the public national network and one of the major broadcasters of NHL hockey games. The Punjabi version is announced by two Sikhs — Harnarayan Singh and Bhola Chauhan: Singh, 28, has developed a signature style tailored for his audience. A puck can be described as an “aloo tikki,” a potato pancake his mother makes especially well. When […]
