Keeping the untold story untold

April 5, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The Punjabi film “Sadda Haq” (loosely translated as “our rights”) — telling a story about the insurgency in Punjab, India, during the 1980s and 1990s — opens today around the world. Not so ironically, the film has just been banned by the Punjab government, the land in which the film is set. “The Punjab government has imposed ban on the screening of movie ‘Saada Haq’ till further orders. This step has been taken to maintain communal harmony in the state,” […]

Savraj Singh (from "Turbans Do Not Equal Terrorism")

Raising awareness about Sikhs in the northeast

March 28, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

A short documentary by Colleen McKown provides a profile of Savraj Singh, who provides presentations around his community to increase awareness about Sikh Americans (via @sikhswim): Savraj Singh gives awareness presentations about Sikhism throughout New York and New Jersey to help combat the estimated 700 hate crimes that have been committed against Sikhs since 9/11. Because of their turbans and beards and because many Americans are unfamiliar with the faith, Sikhs are sometimes incorrectly associated with terrorism. You can view […]

The “I Pledge Orange” movement, one year on

March 28, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

This week marks one year since the “I Pledge Orange” movement took hold of the minds and hearts of Sikhs around the world inspired by one Balwant Singh Rajoana, a man on India’s death row who was scheduled to be executed on March 31, 2012, in Punjab, India. Balwant Singh was charged for participating in the 1995 assassination of Punjab’s then-Chief Minister, the tyrannical Beant Singh. After the protests in Punjab and around the world, Balwant Singh’s execution was stayed. […]

Sikh Foundation of Virginia holds “Turban Showdown”

March 13, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

A recent piece by PBS’ Religion and Ethics NewsWeekly featured an event at a Gurdwara in northern Virginia in January called the “turban showdown”: In January, the Sikh Foundation of Virginia held a “Turban Showdown” for the pre-school children and older youth of its gurdwara in Northern Virginia. Parents helped the children wrap their turban or keski and then watched them walk down a runway. Youth and education coordinator Surinder Singh explained the meaning of the turban and why it […]

Thank you, Gurpreet Singh Sarin

March 5, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Last Friday, a friend and I were catching up with each other as we often do each week. We are a bit of an odd couple: he is a clean-shaven white man with no hair on his head, and I am a brown man with a turban, long hair, mustache and beard. Despite these differences, we have been good friends for almost eight years. During the course of our conversation, he shared with me one that he had with his […]

Warm Bodies Sikh zombie

Picture of the Day: The first Sikh zombie

February 14, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The movie “Warm Bodies” is a horror-romance-comedy about a zombie who begins to regain his humanity, and features a Sikh zombie who is likely the first of his kind in American cinema (via Look a Singh!).
