The incomprehensible New York Sikh International Film Festival

October 23, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

In just over a week, Sikhs in the United States and around the world will be commemorating the 28th anniversary of the anti-Sikh pogroms of 1984 — quite often described as a genocide — in which thousands of Sikhs were pulled from their homes and butchered in the streets of India during the aftermath of the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984. In the decades since, Sikhs and human rights organizations have attempted to […]

CNN discusses a silver lining around “looking like a terrorist”

October 16, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

A recent article on CNN reinforces the media stereotype of the terrorist — a man with a turban and beard (via @jbarooah): It’s hard to say that looking like a terrorist would be a good thing, but it hasn’t gone so badly for Navid Negahban. …”I went to shoot a project in Toronto last year and I still had a full beard and my hair was a little bit longer, and I was scruffy – I mean, I was afraid […]

Emigration to apostasy

September 21, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Harjant Gill, filmmaker behind the documentary Roots of Love, talks about the role that emigration has played in Sikh men proactively abandoning articles of faith — such as the turban and uncut hair — before leaving India: Migration is a significant factor in the process of Sikh self-fashioning. Harjant notes, “…the idea of what it means to be a successful man in Punjab today frequently entails migrating abroad and becoming transnational/diasporic citizens. So many of these guys I spoke to […]

September 6, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Sikh delegates at the Democratic National Convention are certainly getting noticed. Host Jon Stewart of the Comedy Central TV show “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” identifies the Sikhs in a segment that aired in last night’s episode: You can view “The Daily Show” segment here. Stephen Colbert, of the same network, also makes a mention on his show “The Colbert Report“: Click here to view Stephen Colbert’s segment. (More thanks to Karaminder Ghuman for the tips.)

On being a ‘mansome’ Sikh

May 29, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

“But, when you have a beard, a mustache, it’s like a mask. You can’t see the person’s face. It’s hidden.” As disagreeable as the words sounded, my friend’s tone was very gentle and civil.  It was almost as if he was asking me the question: why bother? I was a nine-year-old Sikh boy with a little mustache fuzz and a patka (a Sikh boy’s headcovering), speaking with the clean-shaven teenaged Hindu boy next door whom I befriended on this extended […]
