Reader: Sikhs should abolish the turban

August 12, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

A reader writes: SSakal – The question of the turban as an identification mark of a Singh/Sikh is the key. Guru Gobind Singh created Khalsa and gave them 5 ritual markings to carry as an identification: K – Kes (long hair) K – Kanga (comb) K – Karah (bangle) K – Kashera (underwear) K – Kirpan (dagger) Here lies the Truth. The Guru has never dictated, advocated or commanded His followers to wear a sixth article: T – Turban D […]

Helping children understand the WI Gurdwara tragedy

August 11, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

During the week, I was interviewed by the editor of masalamommas.com Anjum Choudhry Nayyar, in which she discusses the use of social media by mothers to help children deal with the tragic shooting last week at the Gurdwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin: Many of us, as moms, can play a role in raising awareness about different cultures and tolerance right here in our own homes. While time isn’t always on our side, common sense is. If we can arm our […]

Wisconsin Gurdwara shootings: charting a path forward

August 11, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

It has been nearly a week since the shooting at the Oak Creek, Wisconsin Gurdwara. Yesterday, the memorial and funeral services were held for the six victims who did not survive. I pray that the Divine Spirit accepts their souls, and for the recovery of the critically injured. The loss of those from this physical realm can only be truly appreciated by their families and friends. The souls of the departed continue on their journey. In their memory, we must press forward and not […]

Recognizing the female Sikh identity

August 10, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Gunisha Kaur, on the Huffington Post, discusses the often-overlooked component of the Sikh identity – that expressed by women: The American public has started to learn about the significance of the turban and uncut hair to both Sikh women and men. Though Sikh women connect to the male identity on a very personal level through their husbands, fathers and sons, they are not exclusively defined by the image of the turban and the beard. Uncut hair is as much an […]

Poem of the Day

August 10, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

I was a locked temple; The gems of God were stored in my heart, And I knew not. My Master opened the door of my heart for me; My Master had the key and I knew it not. Now I see all. ~ Professor Puran Singh, 1881-1931

August 10, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The memorial service and private funeral ceremony took place this morning for the six victims of last Sunday’s shootings at the Gurdwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. Only that community and the families of the victims fully know their grief, but the resilience they have shown throughout this tragedy has been an inspiration.

The victims of the Wisconsin Gurdwara attack

August 8, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Below are photos of the people killed in the murderous rampage that took place at the Gurdwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin on Sunday. You can read more about each of them in the Los Angeles Times. I marvel at the personal stories of these individuals – all were highly regarded by those who knew them. Their lives serve as inspiration today. Let us hope that we do justice to their legacy.

Wisconsin and thoughts of our children

August 7, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Tonight, my day comes to a close thinking about children – the Sikh children of Wisconsin. One of my interviews today was completed via e-mail with the editor of a blog for South Asian mothers, in which I discussed some resources and support strategies using social media to guide children through the tragedy of Sunday’s Wisconsin Gurdwara shooting. The aspect of the children remained in my mind for the rest of the day. I thought about a middle-aged Sikh man […]
