Oak Creek, WI, victim families still waiting for answers from FBI

March 6, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

In November of last year, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) closed its investigation into the Oak Creek, Wisconsin mass shooting at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in which six innocent worshipers were murdered by a white supremacist. The FBI issued a one-page press release stating that there was “no evidence to suggest the attack was part of any ongoing threat to the Sikh community.” At the time, the FBI declined to provide additional information, and the victims’ families expressed […]

Thoughts on the US Senate hearing on hate violence

Among those providing testimony was Harpreet Singh Saini, one of the sons (his brother Kamaljit Singh Saini was also in attendance) of victim Paramjit Kaur, who was killed in the shooting rampage at the Gurdwara in Oak Creek, […]

Recognizing the female Sikh identity

August 10, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Gunisha Kaur, on the Huffington Post, discusses the often-overlooked component of the Sikh identity – that expressed by women: The American public has started to learn about the significance of the turban and uncut hair to both Sikh women and men. Though Sikh women connect to the male identity on a very personal level through their husbands, fathers and sons, they are not exclusively defined by the image of the turban and the beard. The victims of the Wisconsin Gurdwara attack

August 8, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Below are photos of the people killed in the murderous rampage that took place at the Gurdwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin on Sunday. You can read more about each of them in the Los Angeles Times. I marvel at the personal stories of these individuals – all were highly regarded by those who knew them. Their lives serve as inspiration today. Let us hope that we do justice to their legacy.
