November 3, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Starting this Friday, Sikhs in Yuba City, California will be holding festivities in celebration of the birth of Sikhism’s founder, Guru Nanak, who was born in 1469 in what is now Pakistan: Temple member Paul Purewal said preparations for the parade began four months ago but started in earnest about two weeks ago. About 20,000 people are expected to attend Friday’s fireworks, and 30,000 people are anticipated to attend Saturday’s event with between 40,000 and 60,000 people at the parade […]

Sikhs of Salem, Oregon, commemorate martyrdom of Guru Arjan

June 20, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

This past weekend, the Sikh community in Salem, Oregon – centered around the Dashmesh Darbar Sikh Temple in Salem – held their fifth annual Nagar Kirtan (religious procession) in commemoration of the martyrdom of the fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjan Dev, in 1606.  This is a very significant event in Sikh history, and one from which many Sikhs draw inspiration even today. The commemoration was recognized by Salem’s mayor: During the event, Salem Mayor Anna Peterson issued a proclamation recognizing the remembrance of Siri Guru […]

I’ve been enjoying surveying all the different Vaisakhi celebrations across the United States among various Sikh communities.  It’s become apparent that many Sikh communities are using these celebrations as outreach efforts to educate non-Sikhs about the religion and the Sikh identity. Princeton, New Jersey: On his website, one Savraj Singh posted a couple of pictures of Sikhs celebrating Vaisakhi at Rockefeller College in New Jersey. The setting for their service appears to be an old college building and gives the sense of […]

Vaisakhi celebrations continue across America

April 15, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

While the official date of Vaisakhi was yesterday, Sikh communities in several cities have already had formal celebrations to commemorate the day. I attended American Sikh Day a couple of days ago in Sacramento, California.  And, across America, various media outlets are covering the continuing celebrations in their communities.
