Vaisakhi celebrations continue across the United States

April 16, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

On Sunday, I had the pleasure of attending the Vaisakhi celebration at the Sikh Center of Pacific Coast Gurdwara in Selma, California, which brought together a large gathering of Sikhs from the Fresno County area for a Nagar Kirtan (religious procession). It was very well attended and the atmosphere was quite festive. A local television station covered the celebrations in Selma, which you can watch here. I certainly enjoyed my first visit to this Gurdwara and celebrating with them the […]

Picture of the Day: Leading the Los Angeles Nagar Kirtan

April 12, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

On April 14, Sikhs across the United States and around the world are celebrating Vaisakhi (or Baisakhi), which is the most significant celebration on the Sikh calendar. In many cities, this celebration includes a Nagar Kirtan (religious procession) through the city, and these are taking place across the country this month. In Los Angeles, California, Vaisakhi was celebrated on April 7 with a large Nagar Kirtan originating at the Los Angeles Convention Center (pictured above). Similar celebrations are also taking […]

Bhajneet Singh: Use a positive attitude to counter discrimination

June 19, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Californian Bhajneet Singh reflects on growing up as a Sikh in the United States: I work for a small wholesale clothing company that takes me around the world quite a bit. As I travel around to different parts of the country, people tend to notice that I have the accent, clothes, and personality of a Venice Beach surfer dude. When people point this out to me, I take it as a compliment. Much can be learned from Bhajneet Singh’s proactive […]

Los Angeles Sikh family business gives back

May 7, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Neon Tommy, an internet-based news site, profiles Papillon Imports in Los Angeles, California, and discusses how this Sikh family business supports education through their nonprofit organization in Punjab, India: Call it what you will: taking care of your own or giving for the greater good. Bhajneet response is simply that it’s part of the way he’s been taught to live his life. He explained that as with all religious Sikhs, he’s compelled to give back to the greater Sikh community. […]

Picture of the Day: Los Angeles, CA celebrates Vaisakhi

April 9, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Sikhs in Los Angeles, California celebrated Vaisakhi today with their annual Nagar Kirtan through downtown Los Angeles, led by the Panj Pyare (Five Beloved Ones), representing the first five Sikhs who were initiated into the Khalsa order by Guru Gobind Singh at this time in 1699. The institution of the Panj Pyare – a council of five ordained Khalsa Sikhs – permeates Sikh practices and significant events.

March 6, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

“Gurdwara, in this sense, are a place that make Sikhs, particularly a young Sikh, feel comfortable,” Lal, whose body of work focuses on the Indian diaspora, specifically in North America said. The Gudwara [sic] serve as “a nexus for Sikhs looking to find a sense of community” in the United States. Southern California public broadcaster KCET profiles the Vermont Gurdwara (Sikh house of worship) in Los Angeles, California, and the role it and all Gurdwaras play in connecting Sikhs – […]

More Vaisakhi celebrations across the USA

April 19, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

I’ve been enjoying surveying all the different Vaisakhi celebrations across the United States among various Sikh communities.  It’s become apparent that many Sikh communities are using these celebrations as outreach efforts to educate non-Sikhs about the religion and the Sikh identity. Princeton, New Jersey: On his website, one Savraj Singh posted a couple of pictures of Sikhs celebrating Vaisakhi at Rockefeller College in New Jersey. The setting for their service appears to be an old college building and gives the sense of […]

Vaisakhi celebrations continue across America

April 15, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

While the official date of Vaisakhi was yesterday, Sikh communities in several cities have already had formal celebrations to commemorate the day. I attended American Sikh Day a couple of days ago in Sacramento, California.  And, across America, various media outlets are covering the continuing celebrations in their communities.
