Sikh women: what does your love story look like?

August 29, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

At its core, Sikh scripture – the Guru Granth Sahib – is a testimony to the love and longing of the Divine. Many shabads (hymns) contained within the Guru Granth Sahib use the metaphor of a bride’s devotion to her beloved to express the relationship of human being to the Divine. Consider this shabad written by Guru Amar Das, the third Guru of the Sikhs: The Gurmukh is the happy and pure soul-bride forever. She keeps her Husband Lord enshrined […]

GOP Candidate Ricky Gill passes on representing Sikhs again

August 28, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

In his address to the Republican National Convention today, Ricky Gill, who we can only presume is a Sikh American running for Congress in California’s 9th Congressional District, passed on the unique opportunity to acknowledge our visible minority — whose recent turmoil in Oak Creek, Wisconsin occurred not a month ago — on the national stage. Certainly, Gill’s primary concern should be to represent his district. No one can fault him for focusing on the issues of his geographical constituency. […]

Picture of the Day: “Love Your Sikh Neighbors”

August 26, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The Christian organization “Sojourners” has placed billboard advertisements near sites of recent hate crimes against Sikhs and Muslims: In light of the recent acts of violence and vandalism against religious minorities across the country, Sojourners is calling on Christians to stand up against the hatred. Starting today, a billboard and newspaper ad will appear in Joplin, Mo., home to a mosque that burned to the ground earlier this month after suffering two previous acts of arson. Both the ad and the billboard […]

Local Sikh to give Invocation during Republican National Convention on Wednesday

August 26, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

What if the Republicans or Democrats had a Sikh from WI offer their convention's invocation? What an amazing gesture to the world! #fantasy — American Turban (@americanturban) August 10, 2012 According to CNN, Ishwar Singh, President of the Sikh Society of Central Florida, is to offer the Invocation on Wednesday night during the Republican National Convention. Given the recent discussion about perceptions of Republican voters towards Sikhs, and my own sense (expressed on Twitter above) that having a Sikh provide the Invocation at […]

Young Sikhs remind us to see God in all

August 26, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

One 11-year-old raised her hand shyly and nervously adjusted her pink-framed glasses as she spoke: “I believe the killer had God inside of him, but he chose not to listen to God and so he did a bad thing. He didn’t see God in other people, and that’s why he could hurt them.” — in an Op-Ed piece in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Simran Jeet Singh discusses the enlightening conversation he had with Sikh children about the murders that took […]

Picture of the Day: US First Lady visits Oak Creek, WI victims

August 24, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Yesterday, after a campaign event in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, US First Lady Michelle Obama met privately with the victims of the August 5 shooting at the Oak Creek, Wisconsin Gurdwara shooting: She spoke briefly with temple secretary Kulwant Dhaliwal and Oak Creek Mayor Stephen Scaffidi, telling them, almost in a whisper, “It’s my honor to be here with you. I’m sorry it’s under these circumstances, but I am anxious to meet with the families and lend whatever support I can.”
