Kentucky to get its first Gurdwara

April 12, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The state of Kentucky is not known for its Sikh population, but it will see its first Gurdwara opened by the Sikh Society of Kentucky on Saturday in the Louisville area: The temple is in the renovated, former Van Buren Baptist Church building at 198 Thompson Ave., near Mellwood Avenue. A 2006 plan for condos fell through at the site, and the society bought the property for $125,000 in October. Congratulations to the local sangat (congregation) on their new Gurdwara!

KVIE airing “Sikhs in America” tonight at 7 PM

April 11, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The documentary “Sikhs in America” will be airing tonight at 7 PM on central California’s PBS affiliate KVIE program ViewFinder: The Sikh community is an important part of northern California’s cultural tapestry, yet the Sikh religion and cultural traditions are not widely understood. This documentary captures Sikh social and family life, spiritual life, and economic and work life. Witness a beautiful Sunday service at a gurdwara, a Sikh wedding, the tying of a Sikh turban, and a look at the […]

Hamden, CT to get new Gurdwara

April 11, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

“We welcome the Sikh community to Hamden,” said [Hamden Planning and Zoning] commission chairman Ann Altman. As reported on the Hamden Patch, the town of Hamden, Connecticut (which interestingly describes itself as the “Land of the Sleeping Giant”) will soon be the home to a new Gurdwara: The [Sikh] community has about 40 members, [Attorney Bernard] Pelligrino told the commission, and there is ample parking on the site… …”The Sikhs are an active community and we think they will bring a benefit to the town of Hamden,” […]

Ricky Gill and Nikky Haley (photo: Ricky Gill press release November 9, 2011)

Ricky Gill, from the Nikki Haley school of politics

April 9, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Ricky Gill – as mentioned on this blog recently – is a Republican candidate seeking to represent California’s 9th District, who seems to be taking a page out of Nikki Haley’s school of campaiging (via @sepiamutiny): [Ricky] Gill is the son of two doctors of Punjabi descent, Param and Jasbir Gill, and grew up immersed in Sikh traditions. On the campaign trail, he does not dwell on his heritage, preferring instead to call himself “a nontraditional candidate” and emphasizing his […]

Picture of the Day: Los Angeles, CA celebrates Vaisakhi

April 9, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Sikhs in Los Angeles, California celebrated Vaisakhi today with their annual Nagar Kirtan through downtown Los Angeles, led by the Panj Pyare (Five Beloved Ones), representing the first five Sikhs who were initiated into the Khalsa order by Guru Gobind Singh at this time in 1699. The institution of the Panj Pyare – a council of five ordained Khalsa Sikhs – permeates Sikh practices and significant events.

Ironic Headline of the Day

April 9, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

From the Springfield News-Sun in Ohio: “Misunderstood Middle Eastern group in spotlight Springfield resident will speak about the culture of Sikh families.” The full story is an announcement of an education session about Sikhs and Sikhism this Thursday at Wittenburg University in Springfield, Ohio. My guess is that whoever wrote the headline, didn’t read the article.

The Weekly Beard! for April 9, 2012

April 9, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The Maharaja exhibition at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, California, closed yesterday, but I had the privilege to visit the museum before it did. It was an intriguing and three-dimensional look at the life and styles of India’s maharajas, including those of the Sikh states of Kapurthala, Patiala and Lahore (the latter of which was that of renown Sikh monarch Maharaja Ranjit Singh). The exhibition was very well done and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The image above came […]

Picture of the Day: Vaisakhi celebrations at WSU in Detroit, MI

April 6, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

A Sikh girl in Detroit, Michigan celebrates Vaisakhi (also known as Baisakhi) at Wayne State University. More photos of that celebration is available at the Wayne State University flickr feed. Vaisakhi is the most celebrated event on the Sikh calendar and takes place each April: Vaisakhi (Punjabi: ਵੈਸਾਖੀ or ਵਸਾਖੀ, vaisĝkhī, is, as well, known as Baisakhi), it is a very important day for Sikhs and one of the most colourful events in the Sikh calendar. It occurs during mid-April […]

Sikh Coalition speaks on Rajoana protests

April 6, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Twenty years ago, the Sikh Coalition did not exist, many of our supporters were not yet born, and an even larger portion is too young to remember that part of our history.  Yet it was the most formative set of events for an entire generation of Sikhs. During that dark period, our community’s history was marked by extra-judicial executions, faked police encounters, disappearances, and torture. — Excerpt from the Sikh Coalition’s Lessons of History and a Responsibility to Never Forget […]
