Sacramento Valley Charter’s first day of school

August 15, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Today marked the first day of school for many children.  For most kids and parents, there’s always a sense of nervousness and excitement as students take on the next year of their education.  For the Sacramento Valley Charter School – the first Punjabi charter school in the United States – the excitement coming from the side of staff and administrators would be understandable.  It was their first day, too.

Devinderpal Singh’s sentence has not only been objected to within India, but it has also garnered international attention as other governments and world […]

The “burly, tough and slightly grim” Sikhs

June 23, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

They are the burliest men on the face of the planet – tough and capable and slightly grim. If human life survives the present chapter of Man’s history, the Sikhs, for sure, will still be on the map. — An excerpt from a post on SikhChic of an interesting essay from 1958 by British historian Arnold J. Toynbee in which he wrote about the partition of the Sikh homeland in 1947.   The partition of Punjab was carried out by the departing British rulers […]

June 20, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

This past weekend, the Sikh community in Salem, Oregon – centered around the Dashmesh Darbar Sikh Temple in Salem – held their fifth annual Nagar Kirtan (religious procession) in commemoration of the martyrdom of the fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjan Dev, in 1606.  This is a very significant event in Sikh history, and one from which many Sikhs draw inspiration even today. The commemoration was recognized by Salem’s mayor: During the event, Salem Mayor Anna Peterson issued a proclamation recognizing the remembrance of Siri Guru […]

I am among the hundreds of people attending American Sikh Day on the steps of the California state capitol building.  Such a great show of support, solidarity, and patriotism by all the speakers and in the crowd.

Picture of the Day: Bhagat Singh Thind

March 31, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

From The Mutinous Mindstate of the Desi Diaspora: United States v. Bhagat Singh Thind, 261 U.S. 204 (1923), was a case in which the United States Supreme Court decided that Bhagat Singh Thind, who was a Punjabi Sikh, settled in Oregon, could not be a naturalized citizen of the United States, because he was not a “white person” in the sense intended in the relevant 1790 statute governing naturalization. Although Thind argued that as an Indian he belonged to the […]
