A review of Puneet Issar’s “I am Singh”

December 12, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

At a local theater this past weekend, I took the opportunity to watch “I Am Singh“, a Bollywood movie that was written and directed by Puneet Issar. According to the movie’s website: This story is about a young Sikh named Ranveer Singh, a young, confident man settled in India. Ranveer’s elder brothers are citizens of America. Ranveer’s life takes a turn when he receives a call and he comes to know that one of his brothers is dead, his father […]

According to Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends”, the Sikhs of Stockton, CA are killing Christmas

December 8, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The hosts of Fox News Channel’s nationally-airing morning program, Fox & Friends, went on a diatribe about the policy of a school in Stockton, California to maintain a non-denominational holiday celebration within its classrooms.  One of the hosts, Gretchen Carlson, went on an especially disdainful rant and cited the presence of Stockton’s Gurdwara and Sikh population, the oldest in America, as the reason why the Christian aspect of the season was being downplayed by the school. From News Hounds: Reading […]

Captured on film: Post-9/11 experiences of American Sikhs

May 19, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

It was a serendipitous post on The Sikh Coalition’s Facebook page that linked to the independent film A Dream in Doubt (2007), which follows Rana Singh Sodhi after his brother, Balbir, was killed in a post-9/11 hate crime in Arizona.  The documentary aired on PBS’s Independent Lens : When his brother is murdered, Rana Singh Sodhi finds himself coping with national tragedy and murder, finding support in community and attempting to reclaim the American dream.

What Would You Do? Turban-wearing Applicant Rejected

Dissociating the turban from its negative connotations

May 10, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

For the first time, I watched ABC’s “What Would You Do?” last Friday night, solely because they featured a scenario in which a turban-wearing Sikh (portrayed by an actor) was being denied a job in a restaurant unless he agreed to remove his “head garb”. You can view the episode at ABC’s website.   The show is certainly not a scientific poll, and we only know what the show wants us to see.  However, it was interesting to note how various people in the restaurant […]

Tonight at 9 PM, a Sikh will be discriminated against

May 6, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Tonight, on ABC at 9 PM, the TV show “What Would You Do? ” addresses the following scenario: A young woman applies for a job as a waitress at a diner and is told the position is hers, on one condition: She can’t wear her Muslim headscarf while she works. “It’s not part of what we do,” says the manager. “It makes a statement that we don’t want to make here.” Is this simply a businessman enforcing his employee dress code, […]
