Wisconsin Gurdwara shootings is our latest watershed moment

August 7, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Sikh history suffers no shortage of watershed moments – those instances in time after which everything changes. In recent history for Sikhs, the year 1984 was one of those times; 9/11 and its backlash was another. And now, Sunday, August 5, 2012 takes its place on that timeline. This first day after the shooting attack of the Gurdwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin has been an emotional day. As I have attempted to keep up with the developing news of the […]

Prayers for the victims of the Wisconsin Gurdwara shooting

August 5, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

I have been watching television in disbelief, grief and frustration about the shooting at the Gurdwara in Wisconsin. I will leave the news reporting to news websites as I try to sort my thoughts and make sense of what has happened, its fallout and the implications. For now, I pray for peace for the victims and their families, and the Sikh and broader Wisconsin communities. And, I would like to express heartfelt gratitude to the officers whose heroic efforts put […]

July 30, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

This past weekend, the New England Sikh Study Circle, currently housed in Milford, Massachussetts, held a ceremony on the site of their future Gurdwara in Westborough: [Sarbpreet] Singh said the Gurdwara will serve his community’s needs for several decades, once it is completed. He said he was looking forward to working with other churches and temples in the Westborough area in serving the community. “We do a lot of interfaith things,” he said. “We want to work closely with other […]

Conflict at CA Gurdwara results in violence, police action

July 24, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Sikh24 presents news about a conflict over the management of the Sikh house of worship in El Sobrante, California (officially called the Sikh Center of San Francisco Bay Area) that turned into a physical altercation and required police intervention: One individual was hurt during the altercation, he later told the police that Darshan Singh had allegedly cut him on the forehead with his small kirpan. The victim had a two inch gash and was bleeding. This is a gross violation […]

The state of our Granthis is our hypocrisy

May 31, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Dr. I.J. Singh writes about the case of a Granthi (literally, ‘reader of the Guru Granth Sahib’, these are Sikhs – often from India – who are hired by Gurdwaras to run religious services) in the United States who took his own life in despair: Their language skills are rudimentary; their ability to navigate the cultural landscape of America non-existent.  Their skills in music, singing of the liturgy (keertan) and exegesis of Sikh teachings and history are, at best, minimal.  […]

New Gurdwara under construction for Oklahoma Sikhs

May 6, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The Sikh community in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, recently broke ground on a new, larger Gurdwara. The reason for the new facility is the growth of the Sikh population in the area: We need a bigger building to accommodate people. We started out in 1983 with 10 families, about 35 people. We began to grow in the mid-1990s, and now we have about 110 people in our congregation. The new building will accommodate about 200 people. It is anticipated that the […]

Kentucky to get its first Gurdwara

April 12, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The state of Kentucky is not known for its Sikh population, but it will see its first Gurdwara opened by the Sikh Society of Kentucky on Saturday in the Louisville area: The temple is in the renovated, former Van Buren Baptist Church building at 198 Thompson Ave., near Mellwood Avenue. A 2006 plan for condos fell through at the site, and the society bought the property for $125,000 in October. Congratulations to the local sangat (congregation) on their new Gurdwara!

Hamden, CT to get new Gurdwara

April 11, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

“We welcome the Sikh community to Hamden,” said [Hamden Planning and Zoning] commission chairman Ann Altman. As reported on the Hamden Patch, the town of Hamden, Connecticut (which interestingly describes itself as the “Land of the Sleeping Giant”) will soon be the home to a new Gurdwara: The [Sikh] community has about 40 members, [Attorney Bernard] Pelligrino told the commission, and there is ample parking on the site… …”The Sikhs are an active community and we think they will bring a benefit to the town of Hamden,” […]
