Walmart pulls turban/beard terrorist costume

September 30, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Walmart has ceased sale of a controversial Halloween costume called the “Turban Beard Adult Halloween Instant Costume,” a fake turban and beard that was promoted using a likeness of Osama bin Laden. According to the Sikh Coalition, who lobbied the retailer on Friday to stop selling the product, RiteAid has also agreed to stop selling the product as well. The Sikh Coalition has also been in contact with retailers Sears and Amazon, and the supplier of the costume, Fun World, […]

A Sikh’s reaction to the killing of Osama bin Laden: one year later

May 3, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

This time last year, I reflected on the circumstances in which I heard the news of the assassination of Osama bin Laden by US Navy SEALs in Pakistan: As the evening progressed, we watched the images of people gathering in Washington,  D.C., and at Ground Zero in New York, waving American flags, singing the national anthem, and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.  The outpouring of patriotism, in the manner of what might resemble a frat party, caused me some apprehension. It […]

From California to New York: a tale of two hate crimes

June 9, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

A disturbing twist of fate over the past few days saw a new hate crime against a Sikh come to light as another finally saw its resolution. It is a haunting reminder of the added hostility that Sikhs must face whenever they go out in public. Pedro Ramirez was sentenced to 13 years in prison for his November, 2010 attack on taxi driver Harbhajan Singh in West Sacramento, California: Pedro Ramirez, 42, was sentenced Friday by Yolo County Superior Court […]

Other American Sikh perspectives on the killing of Osama bin Laden

May 5, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Subsequent to my post yesterday about my feelings after receiving the news of Osama bin Laden’s death, I was struck by the common chord sounded by Sikhs all over the United States who, too, expressed mixed emotions about the event: joy at justice finally being delivered, combined with an uneasiness that an increase in hate crimes targeting men in turbans in this country could be on the horizon.  Sikhs, who are the predominant portion of the people wearing turbans in this country, have experienced a brunt […]

A Sikh’s reaction to the killing of Osama bin Laden

May 4, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

I was sitting in a Bay Area, California, restaurant when I first learned of the killing of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan by US Navy SEALs.  At my table, we were stunned into silence by news that came completely out of left field.  Almost ten years after the 9/11 attacks, Americans finally brought to justice the man behind the attacks. Video footage and images of bin Laden took over all of the televisions in the restaurant that moments before were […]
