Pew Forum discusses lack of available census data on Sikhs

December 20, 2012 by American Turban Guest Contributor

Alan Cooperman is the Associate Director for Research at the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion and Public Life. In response to yesterday’s post about the Pew Forum’s latest report The Global Religious Landscape, Mr. Cooperman provides more insight about the study, and about the dearth of statistics available related to Sikh counts in countries around the world. His feedback and the information that he provides is very much appreciated and acknowledged. You can read more about Alan Cooperman at […]

The ironic invisibility of Sikhs

December 19, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

In a recent CBS News documentary entitled “Working for Religious Freedom“, Rajdeep Singh, the Director of Law and Policy at the Sikh Coalition, commented on how little Sikhs are known in the United States (at 19:45 in the video): Sikhs have been in the United States for more than 100 years, and ironically, despite being one of the most visible people in this country, in some respects, we’re invisible. I was reminded of this quote — and of our ironic […]

The Sikh Diaspora: Dancing to Neil Diamond?

March 13, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The title of this post is a cheesy reference to the Neil Diamond song “America“, but the song came to my mind after I explored the latest report from the Pew Forum (a research think-tank that studies religious trends in the US and globally) entitled Faith on the Move: The Religious Affiliation of International Migrants. This report provides estimates of migration of people around the world, categorized by their religion, during 2010. Research studies published by the Pew Forum have […]

Is there a lack of friendliness between evangelicals and other faiths?

June 28, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

It is estimated that about 25-30% of the American population are Evangelical Protestants.  With this religious group being such a significant portion of America, the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life‘s release of their study on the views and opinions of Evangelical Protestants from around the world is quite interesting.  As a follower of the Sikh faith, one chart stood out for me: There was a striking difference in how Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Atheists were viewed by Evangelicals among those who had a preference. […]
