Picture of the Day: “Mourning Chants” by Vishavjit Singh

November 4, 2014 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Cartoonist (and often Captain America) Vishavjit Singh of Sikhtoons has created a cartoon documenting the timeline of the 1984 anti-Sikh pogrom orchestrated by Indian government officials against Sikhs in New Delhi, India, and other places across the country. This week marks the 30th anniversary of the orchestrated genocide of Sikhs in which thousands of innocent men, women and children were slaughtered in the streets of New Delhi in a matter of just days, and for whom justice has been denied since. The phrase […]

Remembering the 1984 Sikh genocide

November 1, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Each year, the end of October is met with heavy hearts for Sikhs around the world, as we commemorate the organized genocide against Sikhs in Delhi and across India in response to the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984. Beant Singh and Satwant Singh shot the Indian Prime Minister dead in retaliation to her ordering of the attack on Sikhism’s central shrine, the Darbar Sahib (aka the Golden Temple) only six months before, which […]

Sikhs in US petition White House to recognize 1984 genocide

November 29, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The group Sikhs for Justice is currently collecting signatures to petition the President of the United States to recognize the organized pogroms against Sikhs in India in 1984 as a genocide: During November 1984 the Congress Party of India organized and perpetrated violence with intent to destroy the Sikh community, resulting in more than 30,000 killed; women raped; Gurudwaras burnt and more than 300,000 displaced. The systematic violence against Sikhs was concealed and portrayed by the Indian governments as Anti-Sikh […]

The morning when the sun set: November 1, 1984

November 1, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Once more I am the silent one who came out of the distance wrapped in cold rain and bells: I owe to earth’s pure death the will to sprout.   Pablo Neruda (1904 – 1973) One morning, 27 years ago, I – a young lad living in the west – was walking to school.  It was seasonably cool morning. There was a dusting of frost on the grass and a slight chill in the air, but a warming sun was rising. […]

Kamal Nath – accused 1984 anti-Sikh massacre organizer – claims diplomatic immunity

July 1, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Kamal Nath, a minister in India’s government who is accused of being one of the organizers of the 1984 anti-Sikh progroms, has claimed diplomatic immunity from the US civil suit that is to begin in September. He also claims to not have received the summons to appear at the trial. The United States State Department has not officially determined whether diplomatic immunity would be granted to Nath.  Sikhs for Justice, the group that filed the class action suit in US court (under the Alien Tort Claims […]

US court facilitates pursuit of justice on behalf of Sikh genocide victims

May 31, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

There is an interesting phenomenon currently going on in the United States whereby Sikhs in the US are seeking justice by way of a class action lawsuit for the targeted killings of several thousands of Sikhs across India during November of 1984 in response to the assassination of then-Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards.  How it has come to be that India’s ruling Congress Party could be sued in the United States by a group representing Sikhs for the killings that took place in […]

How does Obama disappoint the Sikhs? Let us count the ways.

November 10, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Ms. Kaur stated, “For the widows and survivors there is no difference between the Indian government who has been denying justice to the Sikhs for the past twenty six years and the Obamas who ignored their pleas.” It seems Obama can’t catch a break when it comes to disappointing the Sikhs during his trip to India.  First, he wouldn’t visit the Golden Temple, allegedly to avoid muslimish optics. Then, the TSA turban-screening announcement hit just as he was in India.  […]

Remembering the Sikh genocide of 1984

November 3, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

In India, thousands of Sikhs were slaughtered by Hindu mobs in the days after Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984: Khushwant Singh realized “what Jews must have felt in Nazi Germany.” He concluded: “The killing assumed the proportions of a genocide of the Sikh community.” To this day, Sikhs are still awaiting justice for this massacre. See The Sikh Genocide Project for a thorough recounting of the events leading to the […]
