Sikholars 2014 announces Call for Papers

August 16, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The Sikholars Graduate Student Conference is now inviting presentation proposals for Sikholars 2014, its fifth annual gathering to discuss topics in Sikh and Punjab studies taking place from February 15-16, 2014 at Stanford University in Stanford, California. The conference is sponsored by the Center for South Asia at Stanford University and Jakara Movement. I find remarkable that the conference is already planning its fifth session. I still recall attending the first conference, and the 2013 conference is still fresh in my mind. […]

The experiences of Asian American males in California

June 11, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The website Colorlines summarizes seven findings of a study entitled “Widening the Lens on Boys and Men of Color” by the organization Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy (AAPIP). The seven findings presented by Colorlines about boys and men in the Californian Asian American/Pacific Islander (AAPI) and Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim and South Asian (what the study abbreviates as “AMEMSA”) communities debunk the “model minority” myth that is often used to describe Asian Americans. One such conclusion discusses the experiences of […]

A community effort against hate crimes

May 24, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Jasdeep Singh of Jakara Movement in Fresno, California, describes the community’s response to the alleged hate-motivated assault on 82-year-old Piara Singh almost two weeks ago: Animosity and hatred fester in places where people do not engage, interact and share with one another. Law enforcement can react but not prevent; the same is also true of legislation. One should not need to be “educated” or even require greater “awareness” to know not to attack innocent, elderly men. Pizza and kindness in Fresno, California

May 16, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

In the wake of the apparent hate-motivated attack on 82-year-old Piara Singh near Gurdwara Nanaksar (a Sikh house of worship) in Fresno, California almost two weeks ago, members of Jakara Movement Misl Fresno are using pizza as means to engage with the local community in their “Know Your Neighbors” initiative: Local supporters will be sharing pizzas to local communities in appreciation of their support after the hate crime. The initiative is meant to get to know the neighbors better and […]

Reflecting on the 2013 Sikholars Graduate Student Conference

February 26, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Ten days ago, I attended the fourth annual Sikholars Graduate Student Conference that took place at picturesque Stanford University in Stanford, California. I would like to formally thank Jakara Movement for this year’s event, and extend my appreciation to all of the presenters, panelists, moderators, volunteers and attendees who made this year’s conference so enriching. In the realm of Sikh academia, I consider myself a lay person. However, I have been a fan of this conference since I attended the […]

Save the date: Sikholars Graduate Student Conference, February 16-17, 2013

November 27, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

I have written often about the annual Sikholars Graduate Student Conference that takes place in California each year. My interest and involvement with the conference has been as a member of the audience, but I feel strongly about the forum that Sikholars provides to our community, and support it wholeheartedly. I’ve enjoyed immensely each of the three conferences I attended. The conference brings together those engaged in academic study of topics pertaining to Sikhs: from India to the diaspora, and […]

September 25, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Jakara Movement, a grassroots Sikh youth organization (and the one behind the Sikholars Sikh Graduate Student Conference), has launched a free graduate and professional school application counseling service, called Sikhiya, to encourage the growth of the Sikh academic community by leveraging the experience of successful applicants to help those who are in the application process for admittance to graduate/professional school programs. Sikholars 2012 presentation videos available online

May 23, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Jakara Movement, one of the sponsors of the Sikholars Sikh Graduate Conference (that I have written about often), is providing videos of this year’s presentations that took place during the conference in Hayward, California back in February. Having attended each of the first three, I am a big fan of the Sikholars conference. It is not only a showcase of what Sikhs are achieving in the academic world and their expertise in a variety of fields, but the conference also […]
