Presidential campaigns speak to Sikh and Asian American issues

July 31, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Ten days ago, representatives of President Barack Obama and Republican candidate for president Mitt Romney participated in a town hall organized by APIAVote to speak to Asian American issues. Rep. Mike Honda, attending on behalf of the President, offered the Sikh greeting to acknowledge the community: Honda, a Democrat from California who is chair emeritus of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, gave a shout-out to the Sikh community before answering questions on behalf of the Obama campaign. “Saat Sri […]

New England Sikh Study Circle celebrates site of new Gurdwara

July 30, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

This past weekend, the New England Sikh Study Circle, currently housed in Milford, Massachussetts, held a ceremony on the site of their future Gurdwara in Westborough: [Sarbpreet] Singh said the Gurdwara will serve his community’s needs for several decades, once it is completed. He said he was looking forward to working with other churches and temples in the Westborough area in serving the community. “We do a lot of interfaith things,” he said. “We want to work closely with other […]

More on “Man With The Red Turban”

July 28, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

In response to my recent post “Why is this man wearing a turban?“, friend and colleague Lori Way writes: I liked your recent post about Jan van Eyck’s Man with the Red Turban. The turban was, at that time, considered commonplace for artists to wear. Not only did it keep artistic media out of one’s hair while in the studio, but it also came to be known as a status symbol. Here is a website that has a little more information […]

Hargobind Khalsa, of the band Hargo

July 27, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

HK: Growing up Sikh, I was surrounded by Indian music and a lot of ’60s and ’70s folk (a bunch of the “white Sikhs” like my parents who had converted to Sikhism were hippies and into that whole folk scene), […]

The search for tolerance in the southwest

July 27, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

KPBS is broadcasting a series about the “Search of Tolerance” in the southwest. A recent piece in this series highlights the issue of hate crimes in San Antonio, Texas: [Ravpreet] Singh is also from India and a naturalized citizen. But this 38-year-old San Antonio realtor is not a Muslim. He’s a Sikh. Typically, Sikhs have long hair, beards and wear turbans. They are often victims of hate crimes by people who think they are Muslims. And in that sense, Singh […]

Picture of the Day: Why is this man wearing a turban?

July 26, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Teju Cole, in The New Inquiry, asks of the above painting (which predates Sikhism): Why is this man wearing a turban? The gray-eyed gaze of the man in the painting is a dare. Show me who’s done it better, he seems to say. Didn’t think so, he adds. I am not well-versed in analyzing works of art. However, it does appear that the man in the painting is also making another statement:

The authors describe their visit to the Philadelphia Sikh Society: As to how a hub of Sikh and South Asian culture landed in this dense pocket of small-town development, cab driver Iqbal Singh explains what many others will tell me: He came to Philadelphia because he already had family here. And […]
