June 19, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

On the Trumbull Patch in Connecticut, Dave and Nita Anand write about the sacred scriptures of the Sikhs, the Guru Granth Sahib: Bertrand Russell, British philosopher and Nobel Peace Prize winner, once observed — “If some lucky men survive the onslaught of the third world war of atomic and hydrogen bombs, then the Sikh religion and Granth Sahib will be the only means of guiding them.” Russell was then asked why he is bringing up the third world war issue […]

Reader: Why does the American Turban avatar look so angry?

June 19, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

A reader writes: Sat Sri Akal, I love the rustic and historic look of the blog and thank you for highlighting Sikh American experience.  One suggestion if I may, can you please make the logo with a guy wearing stars and stripes turban a little more cheerful with a smiley face.  He just looks mean and angry like the character of jafar in disney movie “Aladin”.  Sikhs are usually cheerful as they stay in Chardi kala all of the times. Any progress is shared progress. — Simran Jeet Singh writes on the Huffington Post about the first policy briefing at the White House on Sikh civil rights issues.  His reflection is poignant – in our own work to ensure Sikh civil rights in this country, we owe much […]

Bhajneet Singh: Use a positive attitude to counter discrimination

June 19, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Californian Bhajneet Singh reflects on growing up as a Sikh in the United States: I work for a small wholesale clothing company that takes me around the world quite a bit. As I travel around to different parts of the country, people tend to notice that I have the accent, clothes, and personality of a Venice Beach surfer dude. When people point this out to me, I take it as a compliment. Much can be learned from Bhajneet Singh’s proactive […]

New Jersey high school student Hermandeep Dhami was among ten students selected as a 2012 Academic All Star by his local newspaper outlet for achievements in and outside of school. In his own words: “The universal quality of leadership is not restricted to schools as it naturally reflects in one’s community.
