Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana and the indomitable Sikh spirit, cont’d.

March 28, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

After international protests by Sikhs around the world (including the United States – demonstrations have been held in San Francisco, New York and Washington, DC) and especially in Punjab, it was announced today that the execution of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana has been stayed.  The “campaign of orange” has become a worldwide movement among Sikhs expressing solidarity in pursuit of justice and/or clemency (the latter of which is something Balwant Singh is not himself interested in) around the world has […]

Missing Jarnail Singh, 69, of Lathrop, CA apparently found dead

March 28, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

It seems the search for Jarnail Singh, 69, of Lathrop, California, and who was missing since late February, ended earlier this month with the apparent discovery of his body, though the circumstances around his passing has not been reported. Jarnail Singh’s name is also listed in the “Area Deaths” section of the local newspaper, The Stockton Record. This news is tragic and my condolences go out to his family.

More sculptures from Dr. Peter Bulow

March 27, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

A recent “Picture of the Day” post on this blog showcased the artwork of Dr. Peter Bulow, who sculpts portraits of people he encounters while commuting on the subway in New York. As luck would have it, Dr. Bulow commented on that post and provided interesting background: I was born in India, in Rurkhela, Orissa, and though I have never been back to Orissa I feel drawn to India and to its people. After medical school I volunteered as an […]

Picture of the Day: Hola Mohalla Parade in Livingston, CA

March 26, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

“This is not only for our benefit, (and) the Sikh community, but it’s also for our neighbors,” Samara said. “In the beginning we didn’t know what people were going to make out of this. But now everyone knows what it’s about. And now you see a lot of non-Sikhs, too.” — Gurpal Samra talks about yesterday’s Hola Mohalla (a celebration of the Sikh martial spirit) procession in Livingston, California.  The full article and additional photos are available on the Merced […]

More Sikhs seeking public office in 2012

March 23, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Sikhs in this country are still seeking greater involvement in public politics. It is a different journey than that of our Sikh neighbors to the north in Canada, who have been able to leverage their greater proportion of the population and size of their Sikh communities to garner seats at provincial and federal levels. However, whereas in Canada, Sikh candidates can quite often contest on a platform espousing Sikh-specific issues (and political parties of all stripes court that vote), this […]

Valarie Kaur’s “10 Sikh Women You Should Know and Why You Should Know Them”

March 22, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

We Sikhs talk a great talk about women’s equality, but we are steeped in patriarchal culture that makes us complicit in the erasure of women, past and present. Even the few famous women in history are defined in relation to their men. Their full contributions as thinkers, poets, warriors, advocates unto themselves are eclipsed by the men they supported. The real life consequence? Sikh girls today are told they’re fully equal, and yet expected to carry out traditional subservient gender […]

Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana and the indomitable Sikh spirit

March 22, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

What manliness you have shown by extinguishing a few sparks. You have made the fire brighter and more furious. ~ Guru Gobind Singh, in Zafarnama – his letter to the Mughal emperor of India in 1705. Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana is scheduled to be hanged on March 31 for his role in the 1995 assassination of Beant Singh, Chief Minister of Punjab at that time. Balwant Singh’s story is available all over the web, but as a short synopsis, I […]
