Sikhs 2012!

March 21, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The first Sikh to serve as a Member of Congress in the United States, and indeed the first Asian American, was Dalip Singh Saund (pictured right) in 1957.  He served as a Congressman representing the Democratic Party in California’s 29th Congressional District until 1963. At the municipal level, it has already been documented on this blog that there have been three Sikhs who have recently held mayoral or head of city council positions across the United States.  However, with the […]

Picture of the Day: “Ever blessed by God be the women of Amritsar”

March 16, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The blog GT1588 provides us with the above photo taken in 1906 of pilgrims entering and leaving Darbar Sahib (aka the Golden Temple): Although the viewpoint chosen by Ponting was a familiar one to photographers who came to the Golden Temple before him, no one in my opinion came as close as he did in capturing the mood that permeates that sacred space or the zestful energy of its devotees. The manner in which he captures the quiet rhythm of […]

US civil suit against Kamal Nath dismissed

March 14, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The US judge presiding over the civil suit launched under US law by the group Sikhs for Justice against Kamal Nath, an Indian politician accused for organizing the anti-Sikh pogroms in November 1984, has dismissed the case on the basis that the summons was  improperly served: U.S. District Judge Robert W. Sweet found that this was not adequate service and that personal jurisdiction over the defendant was therefore never established. “Conclusory statements are not sufficient to overcome a defendant’s sworn […]

Happy Sikh Environment Day 2012!

March 14, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Today is the anniversary of Guru Har Rai becoming the seventh Guru of the Sikhs (this type of anniversary is called a Gurpurab)  in 1644.  Among the aspects of his legacy that Sikhs remember today was this Guru’s love for the natural world. In his honor, the organization EcoSikh launched Sikh Environment Day at this time last year, a movement to promote environmental consciousness and action in its preservation. Eco Sikh has continued this campaign in 2012 and by all […]

Picture of the Day: NY Sikh subway rider

March 14, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

While many commuters occupy their time on transit in books, on the phone, or absorbed in their mobile devices, New York psychiatrist Peter Bulow engages in the world around him by sculpting the faces he sees during his commute on the subway. One of these sculptures was of a Sikh gentleman he  encountered who later showed up in Bulow’s office: One of the people Bulow saw and sculpted on the A train was a Sikh man wearing a turban. The […]

The Sikh Diaspora: Dancing to Neil Diamond?

March 13, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The title of this post is a cheesy reference to the Neil Diamond song “America“, but the song came to my mind after I explored the latest report from the Pew Forum (a research think-tank that studies religious trends in the US and globally) entitled Faith on the Move: The Religious Affiliation of International Migrants. This report provides estimates of migration of people around the world, categorized by their religion, during 2010. Research studies published by the Pew Forum have […]

The Weekly Beard!

March 12, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The Beard. As a key part of the male Sikh identity, the uncut beard is important to Sikhs, but it has a long root in human evolution and history across cultures and faiths. I’ve observed that the beard is becoming a more discussed feature  in media and as such, I’ve decided to share items related to beards that I come across each week on the web. So, without further ado, here is our inaugural edition of The Weekly Beard!
