Still from Lt. Brian Murphy's Dash Cam video showing the mass murderer during his attack on the Gurdwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin

Discounting the “lone wolf” murderer

November 21, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Despite the conclusion by the FBI that the white supremacist acted alone in his massacre of six Sikhs in Oak Creek, Wisconsin last August, an article back in September by the Center for American Progress  suggests that such “lone wolves” are not really so: Indeed, the lone wolf portrayal of far-right extremism ignores the fact that these alleged loners on the right are actually embedded in networks that do preach violence. While there is no evidence to date of networks […]

Two children who were present during August’s shooting attack on the Oak Creek, Wisconsin, Gurdwara were honored yesterday by the Yell and Tell Foundation for their efforts in alerting people in the Gurdwara: Abhay Singh and his sister Amanat did the right thing when gunman Wade Page showed up at the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek and started shooting. The kids ran inside to tell adults about the dangerous situation. Their father, Benny Singh, thought divine intervention played a role […]

Seattle, WA area Sikh cab driver attacked in hate crime

October 29, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Two weeks ago, a Sikh taxi driver in the Seattle, Washington, area was physically attacked in an apparent hate crime as his intoxicated passenger hurled slurs at him: King County prosecutors contend Jamie W. Larson attacked the cab driver during an Oct. 17 ride after commenting on the man’s turban.  According to charging documents, Larson, 48, tore out chunks of the man’s beard during the assault, which also loosened one of the driver’s teeth. …Even after police arrived, Larson continued making […]

Picture of the Day: The pain and resilience of the Oak Creek’s Sikhs

October 22, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Adam Morris, a photographer for MilwaukeeMag.com, shares his photos of the survivors of the shooting at the Gurdwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin in August: Look at their faces. Look into their eyes. You’ll see pain, heartbreak and weariness. But you’ll also see resilience and, in some instances, even defiance. Family members, survivors, priests and temple leaders stared unflinchingly into the camera’s lens. Here they were – and are and will continue to be – in a sacred space where they […]

A recent Facebook conversation joking about using hate crimes as a response to violence in the Middle East.

Living post-eight-five

September 27, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Recently, I was engaged in a polite online conversation with a friend about the attacks on the US embassies in Libya and Egypt, when a third person interjected to proclaim that the Middle East should be “taken over” and bombed (as if not already happening in several places in the region, but commentary on this is beyond the purview of this blog). The conversation ended when this individual then indicated that he was “ready to commit some hate crimes” as […]
