New York’s South Asian taxi drivers

June 22, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

South Asian cabbies have told me that they’ve been spat upon, cursed at, hit, punched and, in one case, even stabbed. One Sikh driver once joked to me that he was called “Arab,” “Muslim” and “terrorist” so often that he was considering converting! Of course, he was kidding, but his comment underscored the absurdity of someone mistaking a Sikh for a Muslim, as these two groups have historically been bitter enemies in Northern India. …However, on the other side of […]

Ridiculous Question of the Day: Does Nikki Haley give Sikh cab drivers bigger tips?

April 5, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

One wonders if TIME reporter Belinda Luscombe would ask such a question to a Christian politician about Christian cab drivers as she did to South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley: “In New York City, which you’re visiting for a couple of days, a lot of our taxi drivers are Sikhs,” Luscombe observed. “If you get one, are you going to give them a slightly bigger tip?” Haley nervously laughed, and shot down whether she would give special treatment to people of […]

More Sikh victims of violence in California

July 15, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

A strange phenomenon has been occuring in northern California where reports of violence against Sikhs (both hate-motivated and otherwise) are becoming more common. The attack on cabbie Harbhajan Singh in West Sacramento, CA, the unsolved murders of seniors Surinder Singh and Gurmej Atwal in Elk Grove, CA, and the unsolved murder of Balbir Singh Dhami – also in Elk Grove – all involved attacks on turban-wearing men and all occured within the same metropolitan area in less than a year.  […]

March 7, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Back in November, Harbhajan Singh, a 56-year-old cab driver in Sacramento, California, was attacked and beaten by two men who were later apprehended by the police.  The men were charged with assault and hate crime offenses.  Today, the two men pleaded guilty: 41-year-old Pedro Ramirez and 33-year-old Johnny Morales were in court Monday to enter the plea agreement and admit their guilt. Turbans are professional

December 17, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

“The TLC couldn’t be prouder that the industry’s drivers come from all over the world,” Yassky said. “Anyone who thinks a turban wouldn’t be professional attire would be misguided.” — David Yassky, chair of the Taxi and Limousine Commission in New York, assuring taxi drivers that their new dress code wouldn’t infringe on religious garb.
