Video of the Day: Sikh man thwarts robbery in Sacramento, CA

Sacramento, California TV channel News10 brings us this security footage of a serial thief – nicknamed the “KISS Bandit” on account of the mask he wears – being handily thrown out of a convenience store by an elderly Sikh man. Uncle would have none of it! The robber was apparently armed, so thankfully no one was hurt.

Today marks Diwali, the “festival of lights”, which is celebrated all over India (the Huffington Post queries whether Diwali’s growing popularity should make it the next new American holiday).  Diwali has its origins in the Hindu tradition, however it has a different historical significance for Sikhs, who on this day celebrate Bandhi Chorh Divas. On this day, Sikhs celebrate the release of Sikhism’s sixth Guru, Guru Hargobind, from prison in 1619.  He also secured the release of 52 other Indian princes with his own (as described on this blog before). Picture of the Day: Fauja Singh, age 100, finishes Toronto Waterfront Marathon

The 100-year-old British citizen Fauja Singh (nicknamed the “Turbaned Tornado”) completed the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in Canada this past weekend, setting a Guinness World Record as the oldest person to complete a marathon.
