October 9, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The Penn Sikh Organization is featured in The Daily Pennsylvanian as this campus group of Sikhs reaches out to their broader community: Outside Bodek Lounge there is a pile of shoes — inside, a group of barefoot students. Some are wearing turbans, others are wearing bandanas. Some have beards, others are clean shaven. All are participating in a langar, or community meal, to commemorate the six Sikhs that were murdered in the Wisconsin temple shooting this past August. As students […]

October 8, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

A recent article in the Washington Post discusses the fading history of Punjabi-Mexican Americans who arose from the unions of Punjabi (and predominantly Sikh) men with Mexican women at the turn of the twentieth century, largely in California, as a result of strict immigration and citizenship policies: “Many Punjabis married the Mexican women that worked on their land because of their cultural similarities and proximity,” [Karen Leonard, author of “Making Ethnic Choices: California’s Punjabi-Mexican-Americans“] explained. “And when they’d show up at […]

Picture of the Day: A new day for California’s Sikhs

September 11, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

At a rally at the California State Capitol on Saturday, Governor Jerry Brown signed two bills that would help combat discrimination particularly faced by Sikhs: the California Workplace Religious Freedom Act (AB1964) and the History-Social Science Framework (SB1540). Joined by Assembly  Member Mariko Yamada, who introduced AB1964, and Dr. Onkar Bindra, who championed SB1540, the Governor ushered in a new day for Sikh Californians, and set a precedent for such legislation across the country.  Both laws take effect on January […]

Picture of the Day: Interfaith rainbow in Sacramento, CA

September 6, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

A reader sends in this photo of a new mural on the side of a business in a main thoroughfare in Sacramento, California. The large painting features a depiction of Guru Nanak (far left), the founder of Sikhism, alongside representations of figures from other faith traditions all on a rainbow background (the color pattern could also be representative of times of day and night).

Sikhs have a significant presence at this week’s Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. It has been reported that 26 of California’s 700 convention delegates are Sikhs, including a set of twins from Stockton, California (home of the oldest Gurdwara in the United States). After Ishwar Singh’s historic invocation at the Republican National Convention last week, Sikh Americans are certainly seeing a growing presence in this year’s election cycle. The growing presence and participation of Sikhs in the political […]

September 4, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Ranjeet Chhabra, of Carbondale, Illinois, used Indian cooking at an interfaith food event as her way to educate others in her community about Sikhs: The event is a weekly meal that began with feeding the community after the May 8, 2009, derecho. Chhabra learned about the event from her daughter and felt that after the Aug. 5 shooting at a Sikh Temple in Oak Creek, Wis., the event would be a good opportunity to teach people about the Sikh religion.
