Ranjeet Chhabra, of Carbondale, Illinois, used Indian cooking at an interfaith food event as her way to educate others in her community about Sikhs:

The event is a weekly meal that began with feeding the community after the May 8, 2009, derecho. Chhabra learned about the event from her daughter and felt that after the Aug. 5 shooting at a Sikh Temple in Oak Creek, Wis., the event would be a good opportunity to teach people about the Sikh religion.

She prepared the traditional meal with multiple volunteers from various countries and Aur Beck, host of the weekly event and board member at the Gaia House.

“With the recent tragedy in Wisconsin, I was talking to Aur and he said, ‘Why don’t you come and speak to the people and they can have more awareness of who the Sikhs are?’” Chhabra said.
