IL state legislature passes anti-hate resolution

December 10, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Making reference to the August mass murder of Sikhs in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, and subsequent attacks on mosques in the United States, the Illinois state legislature recently passed a resolution called HR 1193-Encourage Religious Tolerance to denounce hate crimes and encourage participation and civic engagement of minorities and immigrants (via @sepiamutiny): The resolution, sponsored by Rep. Daniel Biss, (D-Skokie), is more of a statement against anti-Asian bigotry than a legal measure. But it has impact because it comes on the […]

Picture of the Day: Outreach by word, and also by food

September 4, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Ranjeet Chhabra, of Carbondale, Illinois, used Indian cooking at an interfaith food event as her way to educate others in her community about Sikhs: The event is a weekly meal that began with feeding the community after the May 8, 2009, derecho. Chhabra learned about the event from her daughter and felt that after the Aug. 5 shooting at a Sikh Temple in Oak Creek, Wis., the event would be a good opportunity to teach people about the Sikh religion. Those pesky Sikhites

May 9, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Near Chicago, Illinois, former Republican candidate for President of the United States, Herman Cain, speaks at Northwestern University about the foreign oil crisis: NU College Democrats Co-President Lauren Izaak said although she found Cain’s dismissal of global warming troubling, she took particular issue with his skewering of some sensitive words. While discussing the foreign oil crisis, Cain seemed to purposely mispronounce the religious follower names “Sikh” and “Shiite,” quickly adding, “Yeah, I said it,” when the audience gasped. “I definitely […]

Naperville, Illinois is the home of M’Laah Kaur Singh, a nine-year-old who has a role in the upcoming film “The Avengers“. Apparently, she has already decided to follow on a nontraditional career path, says her mother when talking about both of her children: “I saw a spark in both of them early on,” Jaslyn said. “M’Laah always said there’re too many doctors in the family already, and wanted to do something different. “One of the most interesting religions”

December 7, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

“They don’t believe in conversion, so instead of them trying to convert us we just talked about theological similarities and differences,” Lee said. “They also explained to us their hardships living in the U.S. like being perceived as terrorists after 9/11 even though they have no affiliation to the Middle East.” — Harding University student Amy Lee, on her visit to the Sikh Religious Society Gurdwara near Chicago, IL as part of her comparative religions class.
