Looking for Sikhs in the Asian American rise

June 29, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Asian Americans are the highest-income, best-educated and fastest-growing racial group in the United States. They are more satisfied than the general public with their lives, finances and the direction of the country, and they place more value than other Americans do on marriage, parenthood, hard work and career success, according to a comprehensive new nationwide survey by the Pew Research Center. — The quote above is from the overview written in The Pew Research Center’s study, The Rise of Asian […]

Google Ngram of "Sikh" in books published in America

Use of the word “Sikh” in American and English literature

June 20, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The Google Ngram Viewer allows a user to view a trend of the use of a word or phrase in Google’s digitized collection of books. In the chart above, I looked at the use of the word “Sikh” in Google’s collection of books published in the United States from 1800 through 2008. In Google’s collection, the percentage that the word “Sikh” appears among all words in books published in the United States each year (as represented on the Y-axis) is […]

The Sikh civil rights struggle is about civil rights for all

June 19, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Just as we all have benefited from the victories of the African American Civil Rights Movement, future communities will benefit from the progress we make today. Any victory is a collective victory. Any progress is shared progress. — Simran Jeet Singh writes on the Huffington Post about the first policy briefing at the White House on Sikh civil rights issues.  His reflection is poignant – in our own work to ensure Sikh civil rights in this country, we owe much […]

South-Asian/Sikh blogging and exploring “hybrid” identities

June 14, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

I received a message from Priya Kumar, a doctoral student at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, and who recently completed a TEDx Talk (see above) about the role of the web in the South Asian diaspora: My name is Priya and I am a doctoral student in Politics at SOAS London. I did a TEDx talk in May about hybrid identities and the web, and I used your blog as an example of […]

A look at America’s Sikh advocacy organizations

May 15, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

A recent study called “Lobbying for the Faithful” from the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life provided a survey of religious advocacy organizations in Washington, D.C.: The number of organizations engaged in religious lobbying or religion-related advocacy in Washington, D.C., has increased roughly fivefold in the past four decades, from fewer than 40 in 1970 to more than 200 today. These groups collectively employ at least 1,000 people in the greater Washington area and spend at least $350 million […]

A Sikh’s reaction to the killing of Osama bin Laden: one year later

May 3, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

This time last year, I reflected on the circumstances in which I heard the news of the assassination of Osama bin Laden by US Navy SEALs in Pakistan: As the evening progressed, we watched the images of people gathering in Washington,  D.C., and at Ground Zero in New York, waving American flags, singing the national anthem, and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.  The outpouring of patriotism, in the manner of what might resemble a frat party, caused me some apprehension. It […]

The Sikh Diaspora: Dancing to Neil Diamond?

March 13, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The title of this post is a cheesy reference to the Neil Diamond song “America“, but the song came to my mind after I explored the latest report from the Pew Forum (a research think-tank that studies religious trends in the US and globally) entitled Faith on the Move: The Religious Affiliation of International Migrants. This report provides estimates of migration of people around the world, categorized by their religion, during 2010. Research studies published by the Pew Forum have […]

Religiosity and perception of well-being

February 27, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

An interesting survey done by Gallup-Healthways suggests that a higher sense of well-being is correlated with how religious a person is: An analysis of more than 676,000 Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index interviews conducted in 2011 and 2010 finds that Americans who are the most religious have the highest levels of wellbeing. The statistically significant relationship between religiousness and wellbeing holds up after controlling for numerous demographic variables. The study theorizes that this may be because of the habits and behaviors that […]

The Sikh Coalition frisks the TSA

February 3, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The Sikh Coalition, a national Sikh American advocacy organization, has obtained and released an internal TSA memo that suggests that the TSA has the ability to monitor the extent of racial profiling occurring in their screening procedures at airports. As the Sikh Coalition describes, ethnic profiling is of particular concern among Sikhs in this country: Since 2007, Sikh travelers have reported that they are routinely selected for secondary screening at some American airports, even after clearing advanced imaging technology machines without […]
