State of California settles with Trilochan Singh Oberoi, but maintains discriminatory policies

In 2005, despite meeting all other requirements, Trilochan Singh Oberoi was refused a job as a correctional officer by the State of California’s Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), unless he shaved his beard and removed his turban.  The decision of the CDCR was ruled as discriminatory by the State Personnel Board, but the State of California still refused to hire Trilochan Singh.  Consequently, Trilochan Singh filed a suit against the CDCR. “Day of Action” on October 16, 2011 to help solve Elk Grove, CA murders

On March 4, 2011, Surinder Singh and Gurmej Atwal, two elderly Sikh friends, were out on their regular afternoon walk in Elk Grove, California, when they were shot in a drive-by shooting in broad daylight on residential street. Yuba City, CA celebrates the life of Hari Singh Everest

“He was a lasting example of an American dream come true,” said friend Dr. Jasbir Singh Kang of Yuba City. “He was a role model, very progressive in reaching out to others,” and living a very honest, humble life.” — Dr. Jasbir Singh Kang discusses Hari Singh Everest, who passed away last week at the age of 95.  Hari Singh was a community leader in the Yuba City, California area and was admired by Sikhs and non-Sikhs alike.
