Discounting the “lone wolf” murderer

November 21, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Despite the conclusion by the FBI that the white supremacist acted alone in his massacre of six Sikhs in Oak Creek, Wisconsin last August, an article back in September by the Center for American Progress  suggests that such “lone wolves” are not really so: Indeed, the lone wolf portrayal of far-right extremism ignores the fact that these alleged loners on the right are actually embedded in networks that do preach violence. While there is no evidence to date of networks […]

Picture of the Day: US First Lady visits Oak Creek, WI victims

August 24, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Yesterday, after a campaign event in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, US First Lady Michelle Obama met privately with the victims of the August 5 shooting at the Oak Creek, Wisconsin Gurdwara shooting: She spoke briefly with temple secretary Kulwant Dhaliwal and Oak Creek Mayor Stephen Scaffidi, telling them, almost in a whisper, “It’s my honor to be here with you. I’m sorry it’s under these circumstances, but I am anxious to meet with the families and lend whatever support I can.”

Recent tragedy in WI highlights need to pass proposed legislation

August 14, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The tragedy at the Gurdwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, has underscored the need for passage of bills and initiatives addressing the discrimination that particularly targets America’s Sikhs. There are several on-going campaigns whose demonstrable need has become heightened. If you live in California, there are two pieces of legislation that need your immediate support to move forward: The Revised Curriculum Framework Bill (source: SALDEF): “The Revised Curriculum Framework Bill was introduced in the California State Senate by Senator Hancock, and […]

The FBI tracks hate crimes and publishes these statistics in their Hate Crimes Database each year. However, while Sikhs are often the specific targets of hate crimes and […]

US attorney wants Sikhs to report hate crimes

February 14, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

“Especially after you learn about all that, it’s hard to imagine why anyone would want to discriminate against the Sikh community,” Haag said. “We have one of the most tolerant communities in the United States right here in the Bay Area, so if that discrimination is happening here, that’s really disturbing.” — US Attorney Melinda Haag, after learning about Sikhism while meeting with Bay Area Sikhs at the Gurdwara in El Sobrante, California on Sunday. Haag’s meeting was to encourage […]
