West Sacramento Police have named a suspect in the attack of Sacramento cab driver Harbhajan Singh:
Lt. Tod Sockman said detectives and Sacramento police SWAT officers served arrest and search warrants at the Sacramento, Binghampton Drive residence of 41-year-old Pedro Antonio Ramirez Thursday morning. Sockman said Ramirez is wanted for assault with a deadly weapon and commission of a hate crime in the attack on Herbhejan Singh.
However, Ramirez is still at large and may be hiding from police:
The suspect was identified as Pedro Antonio Ramirez… 41. He is described as Hispanic, 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing 175 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.
A $150,000 felony warrant has been issued for his arrest on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and commission of a hate crime, police said.
I’m glad to read that charges include the hate crime aspect, and that the FBI is also involved in the investigation. Further, Mariko Yamada, State Assemblywoman for Davis, CA, joined various civil liberty groups in expressing her dismay about this crime:
“Brutalizing any innocent individual is wrong, but to do so because of someone’s actual or perceived racial, ethnic, sexual, or religious membership is particularly heinous,” Yamada said in a statement. “These difficult times require that all community members remain vigilant and report any suspected bias-motivated crime to area law enforcement.”
Hopefully, the police and/or FBI get their man as well as the two others sought for their involvement in this assault:
Anyone with information about Ramirez’ whereabouts or the assault is asked to contact West Sacramento Police Department Investigations at (916) 617-4960 or dispatchers at (916) 375-6474.
