November 1, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Sikhs in Yuba City, California, will be holding their 33rd annual Sikh Parade this Sunday, which is often recognized as the largest Sikh nagar kirtan (religious procession) in the country: In recent years, the international event has attracted 60,000 to 100,000 people to the parade route, along with hundreds from the Yuba-Sutter Sikh community who pitch in to serve food and drink to anyone and everyone. The nagar kirtan usually commemorates and coincides with the celebration of the birth of […]

October 29, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Tragic news came out of Yuba City, California, over the weekend, in which a Sikh woman — six months pregnant — was arrested for the murder of her 68-year-old mother-in-law: Baljinder Kaur was arrested about 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Sutter County Sheriff’s Department following a whirlwind, two-day investigation, Sheriff J. Paul Parker said. Kaur, 37, is the only suspect in the death of Baljit Kaur, whose body was found around noon Wednesday at the home in the 1900 block […]

Rain of Roses: The Yuba City, CA Sikh Parade

November 8, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Last Sunday was Yuba City, California’s 32nd annual Sikh Parade, a nagar kirtan (religious procession) to celebrate the birth of Guru Nanak (the founder of Sikhism) in 1469.  It rained during last year’s procession, and rained on Satruday, so there was some concern that it would do so again during the procession this year.  However, the weather held on Sunday, and the only thing that fell from the sky were rose petals from a helicopter overhead: None compares in size or scope to the annual Sikh Parade […]
