75,000 people attend Yuba City, CA, Nagar Kirtan

November 9, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

A reported 75,000 people attended last weekend’s Yuba City Sikh Parade (in its 33rd year) in Yuba City, California: Before the start of the Sikh Parade, a function was organized at the Sikh Gurdwara where U.S. Congressmen John Germandy and Wally Herger besides several Sikh leaders addressed the huge audience. Speaking on the occasion, Germandy, while congratulating the Sikhs, appreciated the role of the community in the all-round development of the United States. He said the community was a respectable […]

Reflections on the Yuba City Sikh Parade, continued

November 27, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

I highly encourage anyone who has not had the pleasure of seeing this parade to attend next year. It is held the first Sunday in November. The day is so much about giving. I have often heard that giving feels better than receiving. The leaders and members of the Sikh temple are proof that such a statement is true. — Martha Griese, CEO of the American Red Cross of Northeastern California, writes in to her local paper about her appreciation […]

Fresno, California’s Sikh Parade

November 22, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

“We’re here to pass on as much information as we can to share our community with our heritage and our tradition with the rest of our American brothers and sisters,” Manvinder Singh said. In addition to their donation to Poverello House, Sikhs in Fresno held their parade yesterday to celebrate the birth of Guru Nanak.  The weather wasn’t great, but apparently the turnout was.  Check out the video from a local TV station.

Reflections on the Redding, CA Sikh Parade

November 22, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

“I feel like I fell into a good thing,” he said. “I think they have a good idea with their independent spirit.” — Ronald Swan, 63, who lives next door to the Sikh Centre and serves as the property’s land surveyor. “There’s a pretty diverse group of people,” he said. “They’re good people.” — Steven Osborn of Redding, who led the parade on his motorcycle. Osborn, who is not a member of the Sikh faith, said he always participates in the […]

The included have become the inclusive

November 19, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Like many Sikh communities around the United States, the Sikhs around Redding, California are having a parade to celebrate the birth of Guru Nanak (born 1469), the founder of Sikhism. It’s not only Sikhs who are taking part in this parade, however: For the first time, the parade will include Native American drummers and dancers from the Local Indians for Education center in Shasta Lake. Reflections on the Yuba City Sikh Parade

November 12, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

A non-Sikh spectator of the Sikh Parade in Yuba City last weekend wrote a letter to the editor of the local Yuba City newspaper and comments on her experience during the event: We did not understand the significance of the street sweepers in front of the first float, but judging by the very soothing chanting of the throng surrounding the float, we guessed it was for making the street holy. We were also impressed by how peaceful the entire event was. We have […]
