The “city of turbans and beards”

December 19, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Days earlier, I had visited the city of turbans and beards, Amritsar, the Sikh holy shrine in the Punjab region. My desire, like that of millions of Sikhs, was to see the magnificent Golden Temple, which preserves within its walls the sacred scripture of Adi Granth. The hospitality was immaculate. Instead of me taking pictures of the faithful, they were asking to be photographed with me. — Daniel Shoer Roth, a columnist for the Miami Herald, writes about his trip […]

Turbans are professional

December 17, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

“The TLC couldn’t be prouder that the industry’s drivers come from all over the world,” Yassky said. “Anyone who thinks a turban wouldn’t be professional attire would be misguided.” — David Yassky, chair of the Taxi and Limousine Commission in New York, assuring taxi drivers that their new dress code wouldn’t infringe on religious garb.

The Christmas Tree – nuanced exclusion?

December 17, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

A recent study out of Simon Fraser University took a look at the Christmas tree and its (probably unintended) effect of making those who don’t celebrate Christmas feel excluded: When people who did not celebrate Christmas or who did not identify as Christian filled out surveys about their moods while in the same room as a small Christmas tree, they reported less self-assurance and fewer positive feelings than if they hadn’t been reminded of the holiday, according to a new […]

“We should probably explain what a Sikh is”

December 17, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Actually, why don’t we slow down for a second and get back to India. India is a country in South Asia, and Asia is the world’s most populous continent. A continent is one of seven large landmasses on Earth, which is where we all live and is also the third planet in the solar system. Our solar system is composed of a sun and eight planets, or nine, depending on whom you ask, and is located in the Milky Way […]

When the TSA “drops the ball”

December 9, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

It had come to my mind the other day that I hadn’t seen much more fallout from the TSA’s new aggressive screening procedures. And then today, I receive this news in my inbox: December 9, 2010 (Washington, DC) – The Sikh Coalition filed a formal complaint this week with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) on behalf of Mr. Daljeet Singh Mann, a business traveler, who was forced to remove his dastaar (Sikh turban) on two separate occasions within a span of only […]

“One of the most interesting religions”

December 7, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

“They don’t believe in conversion, so instead of them trying to convert us we just talked about theological similarities and differences,” Lee said. “They also explained to us their hardships living in the U.S. like being perceived as terrorists after 9/11 even though they have no affiliation to the Middle East.” — Harding University student Amy Lee, on her visit to the Sikh Religious Society Gurdwara near Chicago, IL as part of her comparative religions class.

Sacramento Gurdwara among “Best of Sacramento”

December 7, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The Sikh Temple of Sacramento was nominated by SacMag (Sacramento Magazine, available everywhere in the city) in their 2010 Best of Sacramento list: Best Community Mealtime: Sikh Temple of Sacramento’s Langar Hall Everyone’s welcome to come for a free vegetarian meal at the Langar Hall (community kitchen), where all eat together regardless of race, religion, economic status or gender.   Many categories in the list are comedic, but it’s nice to see a Gurdwara be recognized about being a great feature […]

Sacramento cab driver attacked, cont’d

December 7, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

There have been a few updates over the past few days on this story: California Assemblywoman Marika Yamada out of West Sacramento has been supportive since Harbhajan Singh’s attack. Last Sunday, she addressed Sikhs at the Sacramento Sikh Temple: “More than 60 years ago, the Japanese were being discriminated against. The Chinese were wearing buttons that read, ‘I am Chinese’ so they wouldn’t be mistaken as Japanese,” said Yamada. “After September 11th, we’re seeing a similar situation with Sikhs and Muslims. […]
