January 25, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Sacramento, California TV channel News10 brings us this security footage of a serial thief – nicknamed the “KISS Bandit” on account of the mask he wears – being handily thrown out of a convenience store by an elderly Sikh man. Uncle would have none of it! The robber was apparently armed, so thankfully no one was hurt.

The top 10 reasons why Mitt Romney SHOULD make Darbar Sahib his summer home

January 23, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Jay Leno was on to something.  Why would US Republican Candidate for President Mitt Romney want to make Sikhism’s religious center – Darbar Sahib (aka the Golden Temple), in Amritsar, India – his summer home? I can think of a few reasons: 10. It has its own pool. Feel free to take a dip! 9. It has its own free kitchen, open to all regardless of background.  Have a seat! 8. He’d understand why South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley looks […]

Jay Leno and the Golden Temple: we are missing the opportunity

January 23, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Comedian Jay Leno’s recent reference to Darbar Sahib (aka “the Golden Temple” in Amritsar, India, Sikhism’s central Gurdwara) a few days ago on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno has caused a bit of a ruckus in Sikh and Indian circles (and on this blog) and has turned into an international incident. There are even petitions on the web demanding that Jay Leno or NBC offer an apology for his “derogatory” remarks. I don’t share in this over-reaction by many […]

The Golden Temple: where the rich live

January 20, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

US Sikh organization SALDEF alerts us to an excerpt of Jay Leno’s opening monologue on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, where Darbar Sahib (aka the Golden Temple) is depicted as Republican candidate for US President Mitt Romney’s home. I’m not sure if SALDEF was highlighting this in a positive or negative light. Romney’s wealth and social status have been an issue in the campaign and he is often accused of being out of touch with much of America.  I’m […]

Taking responsibility for our crimes

January 11, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

It was not long ago that I came across the following on Twitter: BC it often does RT @DawudWalid: Minorities in America carry sad burden of feeling that one misstep of one of their own tars the whole group — ANNA ⚓ JOHN (@suitablegirl) December 20, 2011 I agreed with it then, and am reminded of it now as I came across the story of a Sikh cab driver in New York who was arrested on charges of rape (among […]

Satyendra Singh Huja, Mayor of Charlottesville, VA, in his own words

January 10, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

After his election to the position of Mayor of Charlottesville, Virginia by his fellow city councilors, Satyendra Singh Huja reflects: “I can’t think of a Sikh guy getting elected in many other communities,” Huja said. “There aren’t many Sikhs in Charlottesville… So I obviously didn’t get elected because of my religion. I got elected because I could be of service.” This is an important learning.  There is an authenticity in this Sikh man who performed his job for decades in […]

Second turbaned Sikh becomes head of US city council

January 9, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

After a turbaned Sikh became the president of Hoboken, New Jersey’s city council, the City Council in Charlottesville, Virginia has voted in longtime resident and city planner Satyendra Singh Huja as their mayor for the next two years. This is another ground-breaking accomplishment for Sikh Americans, whose acceptance in this country has often been challenged by those ignorant of our physical appearance and articles of faith. When he retired from his position in City Hall in 2004, Satyendra Singh described […]

National pride and happiness: being an American (noun) vs an American (verb)

January 6, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

A recently published study in the journal Psychological Science indicates that nationalistic pride is connected with higher levels of happiness, but that the type of pride matters (via The Atlantic, with a nod to twitter user @amritpan): Tim Reeskens, a sociologist from Catholic University in Belgium, and Matthew Wright, a political scientist at American University, categorized national pride into “ethnic nationalism,” which is tied to ancestry and religious beliefs, and “civic nationalism,” which prioritizes respect for a country’s institutions and […]
