Turbans as fashion

December 6, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

On the style blog The Fine Young Gentleman, Gunpreet Rekhi discusses how he expresses his fashion sense with his turban: With every passing year, my collection has grown larger and larger (see photo above).  I’ve acquired somewhat of a reputation for matching my turban to my outfit.  More often than not, the matching will be obvious.  Sometimes, I’ll have more fun with it and match the turban colour to a more discreet pattern (e.g. polka dots) or item (e.g. a […]

Turban fashion or faux pas?

July 3, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

When I ask him if it’s limiting his swag, he objects: “Darling, a turban goes with everything. It’s an important part of me – yet it doesn’t restrict or limit me or even enhance. It’s a reminder of the values my family and religion taught me. It inherently doesn’t make me more religious or spiritual – it’s just fabric.” — Natalie Joos, on the blog Tales of Endearment, writes a feature on New York’s Waris Ahluwalia, in which he comments on […]

Waris Ahluwalia ties his own turban (and tucks in his own shirt)

April 25, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

A series of short films by Chris Floyd for MrPorter.com captures how celebrities known for fashion dress themselves. He recently documented the Sikh celebrity Waris Ahluwalia (previously mentioned here) on video: Not every Sikh receives that level of assistance, and sure, there is the bubble bath and actual newspaper.  But, there are certain things many of us Sikhs do ourselves, no matter what our walk of life.

More turban swagger from Gagan Singh

June 13, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

About a month ago, I mentioned a post on TheStyleBlogger.com that highlighted one Gagan Singh in their profiles of stylish readers of their website.  They have now released a full feature of Gagan Singh and his prep fashion sense. Sikhs can wear turbans of any color.  There isn’t any special religious significance associated with what color turban a Sikh might wear, aside from with what the individual might associate a color.  It’s interesting to see how different Sikhs incorporate color preferences and style […]

The Turban: Fashion Swagger

May 17, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The Style Blogger features one Gagan Singh, who embraces the philosophy that men “put together a sharp outfit that complements them and that they are comfortable in.” “Often times guys are too quick to jump on the latest trends that become popular and then fade away. You can never go wrong wearing the “classics” – like these Bass weejuns which have been around since the 1930′s.” Bonus Tip: Gagan, who has awesome personal style (prior to the party I bumped into […]

New blog: “Pictures of Sikhs Wearing Things”

March 28, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Sikhs, especially in the west, often face discrimination and disaccommodation based on their articles of faith.  The maintaining by Sikhs of their turban, uncut hair and kirpan (sword) have constantly been of issue in many settings. As a result, followers of this religion have made significant efforts (particularly after 9/11) to educate their greater communities about the traditional Sikh identity.  However, within this identity (and outside of it), Sikhs present themselves in many different, stylish ways.  Pictures of Sikhs Wearing Things […]

Well-dressed with a headdress

January 6, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

In their upcoming issue, GQ Britain is publishing their ranking of the world’s top 10 best dressed men on Thursday.  An American makes the list at number two, and he happens to be a turban-wearing Sikh [emphasis added]: Penelope Cruz’s husband was feted by editors of the British version of the publication in its 2011 poll, with Indian-born jewellery designer and actor Waris Ahluwalia and Swedish True Blood hunk Alexander Skarsgard placing second and third, respectively. Waris Ahluwalia hails from […]
