You can now watch “Red, White, and Beard” featuring Vishavjit Singh

January 23, 2015 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

After the trailer was released a couple of days ago, the short film Red, White, and Beard, has now been officially released on the internet and can be viewed for free. It follows Sikh cartoonist Vishavjit Singh “dressed as turbaned Captain America, around New York City for three days, capturing people’s reactions to a skinny Sikh man dressed as a classic American super hero.” Grab some popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the results of Vishavjit’s experiment in challenging stereotypes.

Red, White, and Beard to make its internet debut on January 21

January 20, 2015 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The documentary Red, White, and Beard, featuring editorial cartoonist Vishavjit Singh’s (of Sikhtoons) experiment as the Sikh Captain America on the streets of New York city, is set to make its internet debut tomorrow (January 21). I had the opportunity to watch the film at the SikhLens Sikh Art and Film Festival last November in southern California. It is an entertaining view of Vishavjit Singh and his challenging of stereotypes as he engages people on the street. View the trailer above and find out […]

Captain America speaks to MSNBC

December 4, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

After his appearance as the Sikh Captain America on Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell last month, cartoonist Vishavjit Singh (of sikhtoons.com)  speaks to MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry about donning the superhero’s costume in New York. I had the pleasure of meeting Vishavjit Singh in person at the SikhLens Film Festival in Southern California a couple of weeks ago. He is a very insightful and well-spoken representative for our community. See Vishavjit Singh’s full interview on MSNBC here.

The Sikh Captain America takes on New York

November 7, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The FXX network’s television show Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell has not shied away from Sikh-related topics. After the mass shooting of Sikhs by a white supremacist in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, in August of last year, the show featured a segment to help eliminate confusion about the Sikh identity, and last month, highlighted the issues Sikh Americans face with TSA screening policies. Vishavjit Singh is an editorial cartoonist who in the past year experimented with wearing a Captain America […]

When Captain America wore a turban

September 13, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Earlier this summer, Sikh cartoonist Vishavjit Singh provided a glimpse of his foray through New York City dressed as the superhero Captain America. In an article in Salon magazine published this week, Vishavjit Singh shares more about his experience in challenging stereotypes: I have been skinny all my life, and I felt a stirring of anxiety to be so exposed. Family and friends have pointed out my thin-ness for years, and the self-consciousness has sunk deep into my psyche. Before […]

Picture of the Day: Captain America Singh

June 12, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Vishavjit Singh, the artist behind Sikhtoons, has often opined about adding diversity to America’s pop culture superheros. In October 2012, he wrote an opinion piece for The Seattle Times in which he envisioned a super hero to fight hate crimes, and in a radio interview with National Public Radio in November, he talked about the backlash he received about this vision and of his rendering of Captain America as a Sikh man. On a recent photo shoot in New York, […]

Cartoonist Vishavjit Singh speaks about backlash to Sikh superheroes

November 23, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

In an interview on NPR, editorial cartoonist Vishavjit Singh, of sikhtoons.com, discusses the backlash he received after he wrote an opinion piece proposing the concept of a Sikh superhero that fights hate crimes: I did not expect – I mean, I am used to critique. As an editorial cartoonist, I’m used to that. I’m actually even used to threats to my life at times, because I do very hard-hitting political cartooning. But this piece, I think what happened is people […]
