Happy Sikh Environment Day 2013!

March 14, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Today is the official date of Sikh Environment Day, a commemoration of our connection to the natural world on the anniversary celebrating when Guru Har Rai became the seventh Guru of the Sikhs in 1644. In that spirit, happy Gurpurab and happy Sikh Environment Day! I have been fortunate to join members of my local community in celebrating the event by planting trees across our community. EcoSikh, the organizers of this event in its third year, have announced that over […]

Ensaaf (meaning “justice”) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to “end impunity  and achieve justice for mass state crimes in India, with a focus on Punjab, by  documenting abuses, bringing perpetrators to justice, and organizing survivors.” The organization’s work has been mentioned on this blog several times. On Saturday, April 6, Ensaaf is holding a fundraising event in Fremont, California, called “Appear for the Disappeared 5K Walk” in memory of the men and women who disappeared in Punjab, India […]

Picture of the Day: Interfaith Roundtable event in Salt Lake City, UT

March 14, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Last week, the Sikh Temple of Utah (in Salt Lake City) and the Salt Lake Interfaith Roundtable hosted an interfaith evening of kirtan and prayer. Today, I was happy to hear from Colleen M. Scott, one of the organizers, who described the evening and shared photos of the event: Dear Mr. Singh, Thank you for featuring the March 6 Utah Sikh Temple service on your website. The Salt Lake Sikh community held the evening service specially for Interfaith Month and […]

A reflection for International Women’s Day

March 8, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

When the legacy of the second Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Angad (1504-1552), is discussed, the building of institutions and infrastructure for the Sikh community is often mentioned. In particular, he is renowned for developing the Gurmukhi script (the basis of the Sikh scriptures) to make the Guru’s hymns more accessible, for furthering the cause of women’s rights, and for strengthening the institution of langar, the community kitchen started by Guru Nanak (his predecessor) that is open to all and […]

March 2, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

In December 2012, a competition was held in Amritsar, India called Mr. Singh International 2012 to “generate awareness about Sikhs globally.” While the competition was held last December, I only discovered this today when my friend and colleague Lori Way sent me a link to a photo gallery about the competition which, upon viewing, rendered me entirely speechless.

Reflecting on the 2013 Sikholars Graduate Student Conference

February 26, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Ten days ago, I attended the fourth annual Sikholars Graduate Student Conference that took place at picturesque Stanford University in Stanford, California. I would like to formally thank Jakara Movement for this year’s event, and extend my appreciation to all of the presenters, panelists, moderators, volunteers and attendees who made this year’s conference so enriching. In the realm of Sikh academia, I consider myself a lay person. However, I have been a fan of this conference since I attended the […]

Celebrate Sikh Environment Day on March 14, 2013

February 22, 2013 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

When Guru Har Rai became the seventh Guru of the Sikhs in March 1644, he brought with him a legacy of a sincere appreciation of the natural environment, an appreciation that we are rediscovering today. As our society at-large is becoming more aware about environmental issues, it is timely that Sikhs explore the ethos enshrined in our teachings about our relationship with nature. On this anniversary during the past two years, EcoSikh, a non-profit organization (whose stated mission is to […]
