Comments from the Vatican on Guru Nanak’s birth anniversary

November 20, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

In a world best with lack of respect for human persons and violations of their fundamental rights, we, Christians and Sikhs, along with people of other religious traditions and persons of good will, share the huge responsibility to serve in society as catalysts that promote respect for human dignity because peace is in danger when human dignity is not respected and when social coexistence does not seek the common good. Fresno’s Sikhs are active this weekend

November 20, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Sikhs in Fresno, California are holding a parade tomorrow to celebrate the birth of Guru Nanak, who was born in 1469 in present-day Pakistan and founded Sikhism: The parade will head to downtown Fowler, where parade participants will ask blessings upon the community, and return to the temple. The parade calls attention to California Sikh American Awareness and Appreciation Month in November and educate the community about Sikhism in an effort to foster peace, harmony and understanding. That’s not all.  […]

California, put your money where your legislation is

November 19, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Rajdeep Singh, of the Sikh Coalition, calls out California’s state government for their lack of action in allowing a Sikh to be employed at Folsom Prison: …the state is using hard-earned California taxpayer dollars — including the taxpayer dollars of Sikhs — to subsidize wasteful litigation against a well-qualified Sikh who simply wants to earn a livelihood. In the context of Sikh Appreciation Month, this is the height of irony. If California’s State Assembly wants “Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month” […]

November 19, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Like many Sikh communities around the United States, the Sikhs around Redding, California are having a parade to celebrate the birth of Guru Nanak (born 1469), the founder of Sikhism. It’s not only Sikhs who are taking part in this parade, however: For the first time, the parade will include Native American drummers and dancers from the Local Indians for Education center in Shasta Lake. Center Director Rod Lindsay said he felt it was important to participate in the event […]

The most powerful woman in the world

November 17, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

During the Obama trip to India, First Lady Michelle Obama met in New Delhi with young girls from schools around India.  A group of them were from Amritsar (if the Obamas won’t go to Amritsar…).  One of those girls had a question: Manpreet asked another tough question: whether Mrs. Obama or the President had to apologize first after they get into a fight. “She said: ‘Of course the President makes up first’,” the girl said, drawing giggles from the rest of the group. […]

Lobbying away our rights

November 17, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

“…the lobbying contracts of the major distributors of the full-body scanners show a network of lobbyists deeply connected in Washington. For instance, L-3 Communications hired former Sen. Alfonse D’Amato (R-N.Y.) who was once on the Commission on Aviation Security under President George H.W. Bush.” At the risk of turning this blog’s focus too much at the TSA, the interesting post quoted above from opensecrets.org details the lobby groups behind the installation of AIT machines at American airports.  W.C. Varones goes further […]

TSA: Turbans, Skirts and the AIT

November 16, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

“She said ‘spread your legs.’ And then she took her full palms and started at my neck and ran all the way down my body, full palms, constant contact. And when she got down to my feet, she was in constant contact from my ankles all the way up to my groin, across my groin, and down the other leg. And she did that twice,” Gigliotti said. The TSA allegedly finds skirts as suspicious as turbans, according to a recently-searched […]
