Nikki Haley as “the Sikh Jesus”. Who should be more offended?

May 18, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The saga involving one-time Sikh Nikki Haley, Governor of South Carolina, and the perceptions of her ethnic and religious history still continues: Who should be more offended at the mockery: Sikhs or Christians? Phil Bailey is a political director in the state of South Carolina’s Democratic Party, and made the comment above publicly on his Twitter account: The political director of South Carolina’s Senate Democratic Caucus labeled Nikki Haley the “Sikh Jesus” after she intervened to aid the Republican primary […]

Washington, DC Police to accommodate observant Sikhs

May 16, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C. will soon make an accommodation to allow observant Sikhs to serve: The Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund says [D.C. Police Chief Cathy] Lanier will announce an executive order Wednesday that eases uniform and appearance rules for Sikhs. Observant Sikhs generally wear turbans and do not cut their hair, and a policy change will permit them to maintain their appearance. Despite the long history of Sikhs serving in military and law enforcement […]

Dr. Eboo Patel awarded 2012 Guru Nanak Interfaith Prize

May 11, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Interfaith activist Dr. Eboo Patel, from Chicago, Illinois, and founder of the Interfaith Youth Core, has been awarded the 2012 Guru Nanak Interfaith Prize: Dr. Eboo Patel is a man of peace in a time of violence. At a time when a Muslim name is automatically equated with terrorism and Islam itself is misunderstood, this young Muslim Indian-American shows the power of interfaith dialogue. This month he was honoured in New York with the 2012 Guru Nanak Interfaith Prize, established […]

President Obama cites Dalip Singh Saund, first Sikh and Asian-born Congressman, as ‘trailblazer’

May 10, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

At the recent Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies gala in Washington, DC on Tuesday, President Obama acknowledged ceiling-shattering Americans of Asian descent who were elected to federal office. Among these, the President specifically recognized Dalip Singh Saund, who was the first Asian-born and only Sikh to serve in Congress: “They were trailblazers like Dalip Singh Saund – a young man from India who, in 1920, came to study agriculture, stayed to become a farmer, and took on the […]

Kudos for Turlock, CA Sikhs

May 9, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

We commend Sikh leaders for their efforts to educate others about their culture and religious traditions. As described by staff writer Marijke Rowland in Monday’s Bee, the Turlock Sikh Temple hosted several mayors and other civic officials last Sunday with the simple goal of promoting understanding. The temple would like to make it an annual event. — an editorial in the Modesto Bee recognizes recent efforts by the Turlock Sikh Temple in Turlock, California to educate the community about Sikhs […]

Those pesky Sikhites

May 9, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Near Chicago, Illinois, former Republican candidate for President of the United States, Herman Cain, speaks at Northwestern University about the foreign oil crisis: NU College Democrats Co-President Lauren Izaak said although she found Cain’s dismissal of global warming troubling, she took particular issue with his skewering of some sensitive words. While discussing the foreign oil crisis, Cain seemed to purposely mispronounce the religious follower names “Sikh” and “Shiite,” quickly adding, “Yeah, I said it,” when the audience gasped. “I definitely […]

New Gurdwara under construction for Oklahoma Sikhs

May 6, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The Sikh community in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, recently broke ground on a new, larger Gurdwara. The reason for the new facility is the growth of the Sikh population in the area: We need a bigger building to accommodate people. We started out in 1983 with 10 families, about 35 people. We began to grow in the mid-1990s, and now we have about 110 people in our congregation. The new building will accommodate about 200 people. It is anticipated that the […]

MTA agrees to unbrand Sikh turbans

May 2, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

For the better part of the last decade, Sikhs and Muslims have been campaigning against a discriminatory policy by New York’s Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) that required followers of these religions to affix the MTA logo on religious articles of faith that were worn on the head, even though the MTA distributed headwear that did not carry the logo to other employees . For Sikhs, this meant that for the purposes of employment, they were required to attach an “MTA” […]

Backhanded compliment of the day

April 26, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Don’t forget your passport or your shots: Nearby First Avenue is a great place to walk and discover Oak Park. It is home to many Sikh families and smells of onion cooked with an untried spice entice. This aroma, and the extremely friendly children who swarm up with all the gossip of the street, make it seem like a distant country. — writer Guphy Gustafson, in the Sacramento News & Review in Sacramento, California, profiles the city’s Oak Park neighborhood […]
