Sikhs and the Occupy movement

November 10, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

As the Occupy movement – a general protest of the growing control of the financial sector over government – spreads across the country (and indeed, around the world), Sikhs are actively participating in protests around the United States, taking their inspiration from Sikh teachings. One Sikh from New York, Sonny Singh, describes his motivation, asserting that it behooves a Sikh to stand up for the poor by way of this movement (against “corporate tyranny”) based on the teachings of the […]

Long Island, NY Sikhs struggle with Gurdwara issues

October 26, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

After the Gurdwara in Plainview, New York was shut down due to code violations, Sikhs on Long Island can’t catch a break, as the second of three Gurdwaras there had also shut down earlier this summer: After fire inspectors went to the Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar of Long Island in Hicksville, it was closed when town inspectors found a kitchen had been illegally installed in the basement and people were living there, [Oyster Bay spokesperson Phyllis Barry] said. The temple had no […]

UPDATE: Synagogue offers worship space for homeless Plainview, NY Sikh congregation

October 5, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

I was contacted by Joe Dowd, who wrote the article in the Plainview Patch about the closing of the Guru Gobind Singh Sikh Center due to several municipal code violations in Plainview, New York .  He advised me of an interesting update to the situation faced by that Sikh community now that their Gurdwara has been forced to close: In a gift coincidentally timed to Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, Temple Beth Elohim has offered its social hall for use by the members of the Guru Gobind […]

Plainview, NY Gurdwara shut due to code violations

September 27, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

After complaints from neighbors, the Guru Gobind Singh Sikh Center in Plainview, New York, has been closed by its municipality due to multiple code violations: Among the issues cited by the town is the lack of a certificate of occupancy for the gurdwara itself and the lack of a public assembly permit for the outdoor activities that are common features of the Sikh community… The gurdwara was closed recently after town zoning enforcement officials acted on noise and other complaints […]

Ruling pending on diplomatic immunity for Kamal Nath from US trial

September 22, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Yesterday, a preliminary hearing was held to determine whether Kamal Nath, an accused organizer of the anti-Sikh pogroms in November 1984 in India, would be granted diplomatic immunity from the civil trial proceeding in the United States.  The case is being pursued by Sikhs for Justice on behalf of surviving victims of the mass murder of thousands of Sikhs more than 25 years ago in India.  The US Judge who is overseeing the case is now considering the issue of […]

Sikhs protest Bhullar death sentence at United Nations

July 26, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Yesterday, in New York, Sikhs held a rally (organized by Sikhs for Justice) outside the United Nations to protest the death sentence of Professor Devinderpal Singh Bhullar in India.  American Sikhs have now joined their counterparts in India and around the world in objecting to the miscarriage of justice that could lead to the judicial killing of Devinderpal Singh. Devinderpal Singh’s sentence has not only been objected to within India, but it has also garnered international attention as other governments and world […]

From California to New York: a tale of two hate crimes

June 9, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

A disturbing twist of fate over the past few days saw a new hate crime against a Sikh come to light as another finally saw its resolution. It is a haunting reminder of the added hostility that Sikhs must face whenever they go out in public. Pedro Ramirez was sentenced to 13 years in prison for his November, 2010 attack on taxi driver Harbhajan Singh in West Sacramento, California: Pedro Ramirez, 42, was sentenced Friday by Yolo County Superior Court […]

US court facilitates pursuit of justice on behalf of Sikh genocide victims

May 31, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

There is an interesting phenomenon currently going on in the United States whereby Sikhs in the US are seeking justice by way of a class action lawsuit for the targeted killings of several thousands of Sikhs across India during November of 1984 in response to the assassination of then-Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards.  How it has come to be that India’s ruling Congress Party could be sued in the United States by a group representing Sikhs for the killings that took place in […]

Vaisakhi celebrations across the country close out April

May 11, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

While Sikhs usually celebrate Vaisakhi in the middle of April, there were several celebrations around the country that took place on the April 30 – May 1 weekend, and we are given the opportunity to read the local coverage about these celebrations: “Free Meals at Sikh Day Festival on Madison Ave. ” – New York’s “Sikh Day Parade” was covered by the New York Times, who unfortunately was more enraptured by the concept of free food than the opportunity to educate […]
